LUS: AA using widebodies for domestic/Caribbean/Mexico flights

Just booked a CLT-PHX flight for November 2014 scheduled to be operated by a 332.

This is a new service right? I don't recall ever seeing a US A330 in PHX with any regularity.

I'm assuming this service is due to the five new 330s that were delivered this year which has created some slack in the widebody fleet, but that's just speculation. Anyone have any idea how long this will stick around?

The A330 was also scheduled for this past Christmas, PHX - CLT, but it was changed to an A321. There is a lot of time before your flight, so don't be surprised if it changes.

I was gonna say, make sure to book a seat you'd be happy with in a 321.

Smile It is only for a month!

Sadly CLT-PHX will only have the A332 for a month during the spring. Then it goes back to the A321 and it has nothing to do with the delivery of the A332, it is only to utilise they widebody fleet before the very busy summer season as US Airways has quite a few seasonal services, for example next summer the seasonal services from CLT are:

MAD, BCN, LIS, CDG, FCO, BRU, MAN

On top of year round services to LHR, FRA, GIG, GRU and Lufthansa's service to MUC

Any idea on the dates where the 330 will fly that route? I have to go to PHX in the spring anyway, would love the novelty of it.

I've been looking at some flights in March and have found it on a redeye PHX-CLT. US website shows it starting on 3/5.

US861 6:00 PM CLT 8:40 PM PHX 4h 40m 332
US883 2:20 AM PHX 7:51 AM CLT 3h 31m 332

I have CLT to PHX on APR 30 that has it. It was actually a 321 when we booked. We had 2A and 2C and they just kept us in those seats on the 330.

Paid F? Did you think you might not upgrade?

Being on the crowded 321's PHX-CLT all the time, a 330 would be such a welcome addition! Even if it's only for a couple of months, I'll see if I can get in on the action - flew Envoy for first time last yr on 333 and it was a big upgrade over F on the 321.

On the domestics, I take it's just an envoy seat, they don't actually cater it like an overwater flight right?

Correct - same service as on A320 for example. The IFE is also switched off.

A332 clt-bos

Been looking at some flights in March and noticed that CLT-BOS now will start to be flown we an A332 on March 5th (also the same day CLT-PHX 332 service starts).

It seems 3/5 has a different CLTBOS than the rest of the schedule:
US1783 8:15 PM CLT 10:19 PM BOS 2h 4m 332

Other days show:
US1806 5:50 PM CLT 7:53 PM BOS 2h 3m 332

And the return:
US752 7:40 AM BOS 10:09 AM CLT 2h 29m 332

Neat up-gauge. Has BOS seen a regularly scheduled US 330 before?

US (and others) have been doing this for years. It's more than likely, particularly with the recent and near term increase in 330 deliveries, simply using the predefined international route Spares on active domestic routes, rather than just have them sit idle at PHL or CLT until needed. It has little if anything to do with some sudden increase in revenue/yields on the selected routes, but rather an ability to quickly move a spare to PHL, CLT, or in rare cases, an international destination. The Spares may also be planned as replacements for scheduled maintenance.

This. US normally has limited domestic service with the A330s - mostly spares getting some extra utilization on routes/times that allow it to return to PHL/CLT in time for a TATL flight if needed. However, in the off season there are more A330s not flying TATL so some can go further afield since there are still enough spares for TATL if needed.

It's an award ticket. Bummer they turn off the IFE. I'd actually rather have a 321 as I'm flying with the wife and the 330 isn't great for sharing an iPad.
