N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

From One Mile at a Time (link)

Bottom Line

For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

Link to AA.com Qatar miles earning etc.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

I have an IAD-DOH-MLE segment booked in J for 70k miles that I'm very happy about! It's an almost perfect itinerary except for the 14-hour layover in DOH and 5:20am flight from DOH to MLE. I see that QR also operates an earlier flight (QR 672) that departs at 2am and arrives at 9am in MLE, but I seldom see any award availability on this segment. Any idea if space will open up closer to departure? Will AA be able to open space on this route?

You might find this helpful: https://www.admtl.com/en/guide/connecting-flights

I've only transited through YUL US-US on separate PNRs (arriving on AA-operated and AA-ticketed, and departing on AA-operated and AY-ticketed). In that case, I needed to clear regular customs and immigration and check in for my flight in YUL.

same issue here... have you tried calling-in to book instead?

Award booking - 2 legs disappeared?

I booked our return award flights for May 2019 CPT-JNB (BA)-JNB-DOH-PHL (QR) months ago. They ticketed fine within 24 hours, I got the QR PNR, selected our seats without issue. I have never received any emails or app messages that there were problems or changes to these flights, but just happened to notice today in my AA account this PNR now only shows the CPT-JNB leg - the other 2 legs are completely gone. I checked my QR app - same, with an "unavailable" error when I try to manage the booking. I called AA and was told the note says "schedule change" and that QR cancelled my tickets as the "flights were no longer available." However, these QR flights are still showing bookable with miles on AA today, same dates, same times, same flight numbers, no changes from my original booking. The AA rep confirmed she saw the same thing and attempted to add them back but told me the 'system wouldn't allow it.' She stated she sent the request to QR's queue to reinstate these flights and that I should hear in 24 hours buy if it "didn't work" to call back. I know I'm jumping the gun a but I'm concerned about this falling through as it's a major 25th anniversary trip. Is there anything else I should be doing? Anyone else I should be calling? Or anything I need to be prepared to do moving forward other than bite my nails and try not to panic? Thanks much.

At the moment, just wait a few days and I expect that QR will work with AA to rebook

When you mention that there is availability, is that searching for JNB-PHL or were you searching JNB-DOH and DOH-PHL separately? If the latter, it is probably due to married sector availability such that the individual flights are available , just not a through booking

If there is no availability, there is nothing much more you can do for now

Same issue with J avail showing no problem. I called and got the run around re: the booking fee with the first agent I spoke to. I was transferred to “IT” who tried to tell me how to search and they themselves had the same issue. Transferred back to resvs and the agent said “QR isn’t bookable online so I can waive the fee” so easy! So I put the two tix on hold for now. Give a call and be prepared to HUCA (or transfer!).

Hi and thanks for the reply. I did check married sector JNB-PHL and that's what's showing as a bookable award via AA. Crossing fingers and hoping for the best. I'll just sit on my hands and wait!

ok. I've searched here and seen some "in theory" information but wondering if anyone has had personal experience with a US>DOH>Asia 2 award ticket all on one PNR? I know that it would take additional miles since basically two separate awards (we have tons of miles) but really would rather have it on one record locator.

[I'd also rather go the "normal" pacific route but current availability would put me through extra stops and an extra day]

There is no issue getting USA-Asia 2 via Doha as a through ticket - it will just cost the price of 2 awards.

I can confirm that I have one PNR with this exact set up for US-DOH-Asia 2. Same boat as you - plenty of miles so didn't mind the price of two awards but couldn't find a more direct routing so via Doha it is!

If it's showing available online, you can call and ask an agent to rebook it with the flights that show available. The agent can add the flights to your current record or book them in a new record, and then cancel what you have now.

I'm not sure what you are asking or what would be "in theory" about it. AA allows you to book whatever you like as one PNR priced as multiple awards. There are advantages to putting all flights in one PNR, especially if there are delays or schedule changes. (There can also be disadvantages if award prices change and you need to change one flight.)

I'm seeing this issue for J searches NBO-DOH-US (multiple gateways) for mid August 2019. Tons of availability is showing up on aa.combut whenever I select an option and try to proceed with the booking, I get the "these flights are no longer available" message. I have not tried to call yet, what makes me skeptical about this availability being real is that the BA website doesn't bring up any of these flights when searching segment by segment or for the entire trip.

Noticing some phantom Qatar space on the AA website. AUS-DEL 25 October 2019, for example, shows as available for several routings in J (for the Qatar legs) but comes back with the selected flight is not available dialog when I go to book. Since I could get a flight on the 24th to price out that works for me I didn't call to press the point.
