Covid-19 Update:

  • Only tickets issued on QR 157 stock are eligible for the Extending Our Commitment (EOC) rebooking policy

N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

From One Mile at a Time (link)

Bottom Line

For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

Link to AA.com Qatar miles earning etc.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

If I ask for DEL-JFK it offers me DEL-DOH-LHR on QR and then AA or BA for LHR-JFK. Still, this is something, and DOH-US flights may appear soon.

I wouldn't have expected AA IT to be able to pull off such an astonishing feat in such a short time (several years after competitor UA, partner BA, etc implemented searching of all or most partner awards).
Does online award booking also give the option of holding the award itinerary?

Yes of course. Unrelated to QR.

The more partner awards show on aa.com, the fewer available for those of us who know to check BA, QF, etc.

For your sake, they have stopped showing the partner awards.

I think those who were most upset were the bloggers who book awards for others for a fee.

Anyway, it's back to 1999 now.

I have QR BLR-DOH-IAH on July 1, 2019 on hold with AA miles. It looks like DOH-IAH started operating Qsuites on June 2 on alternating dates (i.e. June 30 doesn't have Qsuites but July 1 does). I looked on ExpertFlyer to determine if QR 713 that day would be the Qsuites configuration and it appears it would be. It also seems like QR intends to have Qsuites on every flight from DOH-IAH by the end of 2018. I guess I'm wondering is ExpertFlyer usually very accurate with this stuff? And do airlines ever flip flop which planes fly which days in situations like this in case every plane doesn't have Qsuites by end of 2018? Just want to be as sure as possible of Qsuites before I ticket the award. Thanks.

Qatar Airways? I remember when Akbar el Baker said QR was certainly not going to join oneworld - a couple of days before the announcement was made QR was joining oneworld.

Airlines change schedules with some frequency. I don’t think there are iron clad guarantees, and an equipment change can occur as long as some aircraft of the type haven’t been refitted.

It may be a good question to ask in the Qatar Airways | Privilege Club forum.

ExpertFlyer shows the configuration from the GDS, so it's extremely accurate at the time you check it. But all airlines tend to change equipment, schedules, and configurations from time to time, so it's subject to change. ExpertFlyer does have an equipment change alert you can set for the flight that should notify you if the equipment or configuration changes. The one thing you can be reasonably certain of is that a flight booked 11 months out is likely to have some changes.

I booked an IAD-DOH flight. The flight still shows "on request" in my AA account but it shows "confirmed" when I check my booking on the QR website using the QR PNR code. I can also make a seat selection using the QR PNR code.

When will the flight change from "on request" to "ticketed" in my AA account?

Usually doesn't happen over the weekend. I'd call if it's not done by 6 a.m. eastern Tuesday.

Does anybody know flight from DOH-ORD (flight # 725) is qsuite version of 77w or any other version? Seatguru shows 4-5 different versions of the flight . Should I call aa or qatar for seat assignment?

Thanks.

Perhaps this will help?

Folks have been posting a lot lately that their flight has gotten the Q-suite upgrade.

Also did ex-USA-DOH award availability just decrease again? I saw a fair number of seats open several months out last week, but not seeing any openings on those same dates today.

Google is your friend: https://thepointsguy.com/2018/03/qat...qsuite-to-ord/

For seat assignments, you normally go to the operating airline's web page and enter the operating airline's PNR. Have you tried that yet? This works just fine with QR, and also you can see the actual seat layout rather than the 4-5 versions Seatguru shows.

Yes. And use the PNR and Last Name to get your seats.
