N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

Bottom Line

For the time being youll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that arent for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards offline, and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

Link to AA.com Qatar miles earning etc.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

This. IAH has something like 20 foreign airlines that have 1 or 2 flights a day, and with large numbers of connecting passengers to domestic flights. They are set up for this.

Had a fairly strange interaction so wanted to post here in case its helpful.

Was changing a 2 pax J AA award on QR KTM-DOH-NBO.

The DOH-NBO flight I wanted was showing 2 open J award seats on both AA and BA.

I called AA and the first person told me only one seat available as a business award. I tried to press and she clearly wasnt interested in helping so I politely HUCAd.

The second person seemed more helpful off the bat. She basically said no problem and started processing the ticket. Then she stopped. Oh no, there is only one seat. I politely said I am seeing two bookable seats. She asked me to log off the app to make sure I wasnt holding space. Still nothing.

Hold on while I try something

OK, this is crazy. If I select a different KTM-DOH flight for you, then 2 seats open up on the DOH-NBO flight, bit only 1 seat is there with your first leg selected. Let me work on this.

She spent like 20 minutes typing and made it happen. I assume this is some kind of married segment logic? Anyways, I feel lucky that I found someone willing to figure it out.

Why did you call AA in the first place? If it was bookable online, why didn't you book it there?

I am looking for flights of similar route (BOS-AMD). There isn't any business class award availability in AA, Alaska, CX or BA until August 2024. There is availability on Qatar's website for crazy 160k points. About 4 months ago, I used to get availability readily on AA, Alaska and BA (70k points with AA). I hope Qatar hasn't discontinued reward flights through partner airlines.

Award booking with QR long haul J and short haul F

I am trying to book an award ticket SFO - DOH - India with an intentional long layover in DOH so I can check the city.
I was able to find SFO - DOH J and DOH - AUH - India J options separately.

I cannot get SFO - DOH - AUH to show available with QR in 2nd segment. However, I am able to see IAD - DOH - AUH. Only difference is the IAD departing flight has 8hr layover departing same day whereas SFO departing flight has 20 hour layover departing next day.

I can understand website always don't show these but a supervisor couldn't do it as well. I ended up holding SFO - DOH online and then supervisor adding DOH - AUH - India segments in EY metal.

I want QR metal in DOH-AUH to use AM lounge and additional 3 hours in DOH.

Are there any tricks to achieve what I wanted?

I don't know any tricks beyond what you've already done. But you'll have AS lounge in DOH if on QR metal since AUH is marketed as First. AM is the business lounge.

AS lounge is also one of the reasons I wanted QR metal but it is closed during my travel dates. Thanks for the heads up though.

I used AA miles for an award travel IAD-DOH-DEL

In the past I had been able to find a business class award on either Etihad or Qatar, but not this time and I booked an economy ticket. My return back to the US is on AA metal through JFK on business, but with two flights in the US to get from JFK to Reagan airport. 40K miles outgoing trip, 116K miles return.

As an AA Platinum/ One World Sapphire member I understand I would get lounge access in Doha. I believe there are a few lounges there. Looking at the One World web site it seems there are some lounges where I could get in and some where I could not. Are there any reviews of the lounges there?

I guess this was just another HUCA situation but really frustrating b/c this incompetent agent put me on hold for 42 minutes, coming back to me 3 diff times telling me the Help Desk was working on the problem but ultimately nothing was done, they wasted my time and when I NICELY was letting him know they can do what I am asking (given I had already done it on this exact same res.) he hung up on me and sent me to the survey. 3rd time an AA phone rep has done this but yet Never on any other airline ever. So rude and I was nice to this guy. I am sure they get some rude people but really unprofessional to just hang up.

Meanwhile I call back and within 5 my situation is resolved & fixed as this phone agent and the help desk person knew exactly what to do.

All I wanted to do was drop off AUH-TLV on EY for a HKG-DOH-AUH-TLV reservation with the first 2 in QR. The first person essentially came back and said sorry we cant do this b/c there is no availability in QR in F for your long haul. I dont get it though how can there be so many agents not know how to take off a flight (or add a flight). Getting tired of so many saying you have to cancel & rebook the whole thing. The thing frustrating about today was the long hold time while he was with the help desk b/c I would have assumed at that point the situation was being taken care of.

Also, why cant AA just give you back the difference in taxes rather than a full refund & charge you card the amount. No big deal but with DL/UA its done like that with ease.

Just HUCA. Assuming these are all AA metal flights it will be no problem for a good agent to rebook you in F on another flight.

Edit: sorry I lost track that we're in the QR thread. You're going to have to call AA back and find a good agent that can work with their liason at oneworld/QR to hopefully open up F on another flight.

Does QR no longer allow partner awards in J for 85k AA miles from Europe to Australia? I've got two separate bookings on hold - BER-DOH and DOH-BNE - but the AA site won't bring up the complete trip and the agent can't combine the two reservations into one booking.

QR has nothing to do with how much AA charges for an award booking.

It is most likely just married/divorced segments award availability, whereby QR is making BER-DOH and DOH-BNE available by themselves but not combined.

Also an AA agent will never able to combine 2 separate award holds like that into a single reservation. Because you put both flights on separate holds you have taken them out of award inventory (assuming there was 1 award seat available on both flights). There needs to be award inventory to try and combine everything into a single reservation.

Your best bet is always to put only one flight on hold, like DOH-BNE the harder one to find, then call AA and see if they can add the BER-DOH to the same reservation.
