N.B. Upgrades on QR book into fares not granted EQD/EQM by AA. If you're upgraded on QR, be prepared for pushback from some AA agents. You may have to submit a formal request with accompanying documentation reflecting you purchased an eligible fare class.

NOTE:AA has removed most EY and QR award access from aa.com due to a glitch booking these:

Bottom Line

For the time being you’ll have to call American if you want to ticket AAdvantage awards on Etihad & Qatar that aren’t for travel to & from the US or Canada. It makes sense that American took these awards “offline,” and now it also makes sense why so many passengers have been having issues with checked bags on awards.
If you experience difficulties with the AA reservations system, you may be able to book by calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (South African agency Mindpearl) - as they can often see the inventory more reliably, and you can book.

NOTE: USA Canada travel on QR will earn EQ miles etc. in accordance with the fare class purchased.

Links:

Link to AA.com Qatar miles earning etc.

AA miles earning on QR changed 1 May 2016 (Link):

Minimum miles guarantee applies.

Checking QR award availability:

You can check QR availability on AA's site, BA's site, QF's site, www.awardnexus.com (which pulls from BA and/or QF), or the KVS tool. (A certain number of searches are free to FlyerTalk members at AwardNexus; click the "more signup options" link under the green Purchase button to sign up as a FlyerTalk member.)

When checking QR award availability, you have to check each segment individually. Both BA and QF can generate very misleading information if you try to check QR award availability all the way through [xxx-(DOH)-yyy] in one step. Be aware AA can only book 330 days out, even if you see availability farther out.

Awards on QR may not be visible to AA agents if a multi-segment itinerary is requested; broken into individual segments will generally reveal availability, however.

As well, AA Australia or New Zealand (actually MindPearl in Fiji) can often see and book AA awards on QR US-based ones might not be able to.

From danger: For AA awards, Economy is X, Business is U, First is Z. NOTE: Those with Z (First) awards may see "Z (Business Class)" shown on the QR website; this is a known glitch.

As well, QR sells intra gulf two class service as First and Economy, as AA does domestically. This can cause some issues with a Business flight including a Gulf "First" flight potentially incurring an F award redemption.

From hotelmotel: "Got my QR PNR from AA. Popped over to QR and selected seats." (AAdvantage award.)

Days of the week: To/from the USA, especially in business class, Qatar often only offers awards seats for Mon..Thu departures, not Fri..Sun departures. So makes sure you check different parts of the week, and not just always weekends (if you're not finding anything on weekends).

NOTE: At DOH / Hamad International Airport, lounges as follows:

Qatar Airways Al Safwa First Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying First Class on Qatar or oneworld airlines and QRPC Platniums flying in ticketed Business (not oneworld Emeralds flying other lower classes of service)

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge (not a oneworld lounge): only accessible to those flying Business Class on Qatar or oneworld (not oneworld Sapphire flying lower classes of service)

Oryx Lounge: Third party lounge.

Qatar Airways HIA First Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First Class ticketed customers, Emerald members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Qatar Airways HIA Business Class Lounge (oneworld lounge): First and Business Class ticketed customers, Emerald and Sapphire members, as well as their accompanying guests, travelling on Qatar Airways and other oneworld member flights.

Arrivals Lounges (not oneworld lounges): only accessible to those arriving in First or Business Class on Qatar Airways (not oneworld Sapphire flying other oneworld airlines or other classes of service)

See FT: QR Lounges at HIA

Selecting Qatar Airways Seats
If you want to assign a seat after booking an award, you should first try the Qatar website or app. If you experience issues, please try a partner site like Royal Jordanian, Malaysia Airlines, or Sri-Lankan. You can also reach out to the QR Twitter team to fix your record in order to be able to select seats on their own site.

MIA - DOJ - MLE Business/first AA award

Hey guys, traveling next month with wife and parents to the maldives from Miami, we were able to book 2 one way tkts for 70k AAdvantage miles each MIA - DOJ - MLE and another pair for the same amount (70k) just MIA - DOH, trying now to add last leg to the award just like the first pair. DOH -MLE leg is available as an award and also MIA - DOJ - MLE but in economy class and don't want to risk losing current booking in business just to try to rebook the whole thing.
Just talked to AAdvantage customer service, even though they see availability and system allows for them to try adding the last leg, so we can all travel together, they cant get confirmation from Qatar airways so reservation does not stick, any advise?

Many thanks in advance.

Hector

It's Asia 1 - India - middle east that is allowed. Asia 1 - India can only route through Asia 2

I know this has been asked a lot, but trying to refresh my skills/memory here....

Trying to get JNB-NYC in J in the summer. JNB-DOH is pretty open, but there seems to be no QR availability DOH-NYC (I haven't checked other ports of entry in depth yet). There is DOH-AMM-JFK availability, but AA.com doesn't marry JNB-DOH-AMM-NYC. Am I SOL for booking this, or would a call to AA help piece these together?

Thanks!

If you see availability on the segments, call AA and an agent should be able to piece it together. (Married segments shouldn't be an issue since there are two different airlines.)

Qatar cut 4 1/2 days off my AA Award ticket dates - normal?

My original post in Qatar forum: I booked tickets in October for three people from EBB-PHL departing Aug 12 in Q suites. I received no messages at all from either airline but when I went to look at the itinerary to check the times yesterday, AA shows it as not available. After contacting them via Twitter, they told me the trip had been changed to Aug 8, 4 1/2 days earlier. We were supposed to be gorilla trekking then. Is this normal? (And I realize not much is normal during these times) but four plus days??? I am beyond nervous they will change dates on me again.

And a follow up: After persistence with AA over Twitter they have decided to reach out to their Qatar liaison to see what can be done (they originally just said that basically it is what it is and that I could cancel my flights and get refunded). They say they think the flight was cancelled and then reinstated. They said it will take four days to get back to me. But I am terrified that we are going to drop a lot of money and then have flights changed again and yes I have travel insurance but still. I am just trying to get a feel for how often something like this happens with such a drastic difference in dates. Any input is appreciated!

It's isn't usual. AA was probably right that the flight was cancelled and then reinstated. When flights are cancelled, there's typically an auto-reaccommodation process that tries to put you on similar flights. That might have been complicated by the fact that QR's EBB-DOH flights around your dates operate on quite different times on different days of the week. It's good that AA has asked the liaison to ask QR to cooperate; hopefully QR reinstates you on their flight. If QR doesn't cooperate, AA might be able to put you on BA flights via NBO and LHR.

Just to check with the experts here: unlikely QR will release any award space for the rest of the year? Was thinking they might load some in after WC ended on Dec 18th, but nothing... Any hope they might add more randomly throughout the year?

They stopped releasing award space one week before the start of the WC, I’d expect that to last at least until 1 week after it ends

Exactly. For instance, DOH-MLE award is available only from 23 or 24th Dec according to BA.com.

Ah, thanks! I now see this and SFO-DOH availability starting a week out... Probably 0% chance they'd open up the closer dates later in the year? Could put a EF notification, but should probably just execute 'plan B' with EY for now?

You appear to be right. Eight days later and me having to follow up with AA Twitter, I get the same response as I initially got. I can cancel or see if there is anything else available.

Not to hijack your question, but just commenting that, having flown QR F multiple times, I prefer Qsuite. It's more private. Though there are advantages to F, specifically the larger seat and the enormous lavatories.
