On LHR->DFW I liked the wifi at first but later in the flight it seemed to get slower and more unreliable. This might be less of an issue once people have to pay and there's less contention for the available bandwidth. I was mostly trying to catch up on work email on a mobile website. I might've felt differently if I was using an Outlook on a laptop rather than a website on my iPhone.

update on my original post:
the internet connection went down about 30 mins later before i could finish the test download.
Worse, after the meal I came down with severe food poisoning and spent probably half of the remaining 5 hours in the lav. On landing I had to be helped off the plane by wheelchair, airport staff called 911 and the local ambulance took me to the nearby Baylor Medical Center. They treated me very nicely there, and an IV drip + anti-biotics eventually did the trick. I stayed overnight nearby, and AA put me on the 11:30am flight home to SFO in F.... feeling much better today.
Unfortunately, due to the unpleasantness described above, I did not really have a chance to appreciate the 77W's J seat, although I do have some criticisms of it (I'll post separately on that topic).

1. The tray table needs to be able to slide forward.
2. The tv needs top be able to tilt.
3. The foot rest is too far.
4. The seat belts could be a bit longer.
5. The armrest is angled the wrong way and thus useless.

I hope that was in the forward ones. Much more spacious compared to the rear cabin ones. They almost seem like an afterthought in comparison. I can't even recall if the rear ones had the nifty sensor faucet controls.
I took one of the first flights on AA51 for a new plane (less than 5 r/t flights) - they didn't have wifi the entire flight, and no announcement to that effect. I think the crew was pretty green on the plane as well.

And to take up a little more bandwidth by bragging to all of us on FT!
My experience using the international satellite WiFi coming back from LHR a couple weeks ago wasn't as good. I found it slow compared to Aircell's ATG system. Also had a couple of times when the signal dropped offline completely which required a complete reconnect.
Nice to have but I really hope they get the spotty connectivity fixed and speed improved too (maybe they already have if OP's experience wasn't a one-off?) before I would want to actually pay for the service.

Perhaps 2, 4, 10 other pax (or perhaps the whole plane) decided to DOWNLOAD a TV show and congest the bandwidth...therefore...it went down...
And then when they install filters, blockers, etc to avoid people doing this...which would probably affect functionality of certain sites....then we will complain again.
