Update: flew 77W on Feb 7. Service is not "AA Internet", but rather "AA Inflight". Service provider is T-Mobile/Panasonic. Panasonic field worker was inflight and said they are having issues with their software, not the Satelite. The only service I was able to get was mobile.aa.com. They plan software update this week and hope to restore service soon.

You might not be aware but the connection speed/bandwidth available to an entire aircraft over either Gogo or satellite is much less than a single home broadband connection, and about the same as the bandwidth available to your smartphone.

If Netflix wasn't blocked, not only would it not work well (you would probably only be able to watch non-HD streams), it would choke up the entirety of the available bandwidth, pissing off every other person on the plane trying to use the internet.

The first time I used gogo i downloaded a 350MB file in <30 min or so, so it's speed wasn't bad at all.

Not sure when in 2013 the first plane with the service goes live, though.

The GoGo satellite system is going live in 2013. Delta has announced that they will be installing GoGo's satellite-based int'l WiFi on their entire widebody international fleet, and they're targeting 33% of the fleet complete by the end of 2013.

•Working with Inmarsat, Gogo will begin in-flight testing of the Global Xpress aeronautical services after the launch of the first Inmarsat-5 satellite, which is scheduled for mid-2013. Gogo plans to offer Ka-satellite service in the 1st quarter of 2015. Inmarsat’s Global Xpress service will allow Gogo to utilize the first global Ka-band solution, which is expected to bring significantly improved performance to the global aero market in terms of coverage, capacity and cost.
The slower Ku-band system is available this spring.

On AA, only the few Boeing 777-300ER ("77W") have global satellite-based WiFi; all other AA aircraft with WiFi have mobile telephony based WiFi, so only usable within or close to the US. It may be the 77W will fly ORD-NRT at some point, but that point is not now.
Many of us rely on our tablets, computers, e-readers, iPods, books, etc. for the most reliable forms of IFE; even the best IFE systems can go kaput.

Currently the service is free of charge on a trial basis for the initial roll out, pricing has not been announced. However any Aircell Gogo subscription or promo codes you may have are not applicable for international wifi.
