International satellite-based Wi-Fi is available on the Boeing 777-200ER, 777-300ER and 787 Dreamliners

International WiFi is Panasonic Ku band satellite based (and is blocked in Chinese air space). Note, the latest batch of 787-8s have Viasat high speed satellite wifi

$19 seems like quite the bargain for flights that can be up to 10 hours long ^.

About in line with what LH charges for FlyNet. HotSpot Pass Sky 24 hours: €19.95 or 7,000 miles.

They plan software update this week and hope to restore service soon.
Thank you for the correction. Indeed "AA Inflight".

If Netflix wasn't blocked, not only would it not work well (you would probably only be able to watch non-HD streams), it would choke up the entirety of the available bandwidth, pissing off every other person on the plane trying to use the internet.

You might not be aware but the connection speed/bandwidth available to an entire aircraft over either Gogo or satellite is much less than a single home broadband connection, and about the same as the bandwidth available to your smartphone.

Do LH charge all passengers for access regardless of class of service?

my smartphone has LTE (although it's ATT) but it can do up to about 10Mbps sometimes.
The first time I used gogo i downloaded a 350MB file in <30 min or so, so it's speed wasn't bad at all.

The GoGo satellite system is going live in 2013. Delta has announced that they will be installing GoGo's satellite-based int'l WiFi on their entire widebody international fleet, and they're targeting 33% of the fleet complete by the end of 2013.

Not sure when in 2013 the first plane with the service goes live, though.

You're right - I was thinking of the Ka-band system, set to go live in 2015:

•Working with Inmarsat, Gogo will begin in-flight testing of the Global Xpress aeronautical services after the launch of the first Inmarsat-5 satellite, which is scheduled for mid-2013. Gogo plans to offer Ka-satellite service in the 1st quarter of 2015. Inmarsat’s Global Xpress service will allow Gogo to utilize the first global Ka-band solution, which is expected to bring significantly improved performance to the global aero market in terms of coverage, capacity and cost.

The slower Ku-band system is available this spring.

Not currently available on AA metal ORD-NRT, only 77W aircraft are currently equipped with international wifi. JL offers wifi on this route:

On AA, only the few Boeing 777-300ER ("77W") have global satellite-based WiFi; all other AA aircraft with WiFi have mobile telephony based WiFi, so only usable within or close to the US. It may be the 77W will fly ORD-NRT at some point, but that point is not now.

Many of us rely on our tablets, computers, e-readers, iPods, books, etc. for the most reliable forms of IFE; even the best IFE systems can go kaput.

Any idea what AA is charging for the international WIFI? I'll be on a 77W from LHR to DFW in April, and i can't find anything about how much it cost.

Currently the service is free of charge on a trial basis for the initial roll out, pricing has not been announced. However any Aircell Gogo subscription or promo codes you may have are not applicable for international wifi.
