(ex-Air Pacific)

NOTE: AA seems not to be able to see FJ award inventory. Try calling AA Australia (+61 2-9101-1948 ) then press 4 - or the New Zealand number (+64 09-308-4014) as an alternative - although the call center is actually in Suva, Fiji (I believe it's our old South African agency friend Mindpearl) - as they can see the inventory reliably, and you can book. Or, put the FJ segments on hold so you can flesh out the award afterward and/or pay the fees in USD through the US call center.

Air Pacific (46% Qantas owned, 51% Fiji government owned) rebranded as Fiji Airways (as of June 2013 - follow the topic and changes here: Air Pacific becoming Fiji Airways (again) & securing three A330-200s (2013) in the Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs. In 2016, an A330-300 initiated service NAN-LAX, and in 2017 NAN-SFO.

New aircraft, configuration, new baggage limits etc. for 2016 are in this FT thread.

Fiji Airways is still an AA partner (as well as a codeshare partner of AS, CX, EY, IE, NZ and QF). The partnership has not changed - one earns redeemable (Award) AA miles flying as FJ, AA EQ miles can be earned if flown as AA or QF codeshares (often more expensive); no EQ miles if flown as AS or CX codeshares (as FJ is not a oneworld member).

Business (née Tambua) Class in both (three) A330-200 and (one) -300: 24 Zodiac / Weber 7811 8 degree from horizontal angled lie-flats with A/C and USB, 15.4" screen with Panasonic eX2 AVOD in 2 x 2 x 2 configuration. (The SQ leased 747 offered 28 Tabua seats - not much of a loss here.)

Economy (née Pacific Voyager) Class: 249 (289 in-300) Weber 5751 slim-line with IFE, A/C and USB power in a 2 x 4 x 2 configuration with 31-32" pitch and 7.5" total recline (6" seat back movement, 1.5" seat base movement) and 9" Panasonic touchscreen AVOD with controls in the seatback (not armrest). (747 offered 430 with 32" in Pacific Voyager, a major seat capacity reduction.)

Starting your trip in Nadi in. Business Class you will be able to access the new Fiji Airways Premier Lounge (but as FJ is not a oneworld airline, status alone won’t get you in).

"Bula", pronounced mboo-lah, short for "ni sa bula", merely is the typical Fijian "hello" and "welcome"; it's not a class of service. Fiji Airways Premier Lounge is the name for their NAN lounge and VIP club; it is costly and bureaucratically challenging to join - but if you're flying FJ a lot, it offers an additional checked in bag, lounge access and other perqs.[/quote]

These aren't two separate carriers. Although there may be some archaic references on aa.com and elsewhere, Fiji's flag carrier changed its name from Air Pacific to Fiji Airways on June 27. It was and is an earn-and-burn partner, though not a member of oneworld.

For years, flying Air Pacific would earn (redeemable only) ) miles (unless flying as an AA codeshare - but not the QF codeshare), and one could use AA miles for awards. That continues, though Air Pacific, FJ, is now Fiji Airways, FJ. See here on the AA website.

AA has several airline partners that are not oneworld partners, and some of them one can even earn EQ Miles on - such as Alaska.

Very helpful.

A second question: When I look for an award going from LAX - NAN (Fiji) AA gives me the message:

"There are currently no awards available on AA.com for your requested Origin and Destination. Please modify your request or contact AAdvantage Reservations for award opportunities on all AAdvantage participating airlines"

Is this something I need to call AA about or are there truly no awards available? It doesn't even give me the option to look at a full month calendar.

As an aside.. when looking for revenue flights, AA's WEB site still calls them Air Pacific, not Fiji Airways.

Yep. The name change just occurred recently, and AA's web people are known to be less than lightning-speed fast at updating the ancient site with things like this. And that is also most likely why a number of airlines offering award seats with AAdvantage miles do not show up on aa.com; one must call AA for awards on those airlines, including FJ.

I called AA and they do have coach seats available. Anyone know if J/F are ever opened up?

Or suggestions on monitoring to see if any J/F have become availalbe? (aside from calling them everyday)

I remember when it used to be $750 US LAX-NAN and $750 Fiji Dollars NAN-LAX.

The old Singapore-leased in 747-400s were definitely showing their age. The A330s will be welcome, albeit they will indeed offer less selection for awards (and apparently significantly more expensive counter upgrades).

ThanxsisC, you did not have to call QF - you could have done the search online via their website.
Well it makes perfect sense since the J capacity has been reduced to 24 on the new A330-200s and the seats are at least flat at an angle now.

Side note, I booked an award J seat NAN - SYD using my AAdvantage 3 months before departure without any problems and the flight is scheduled to operate on an A330-200.

Sorry to revive this, I'm trying to read through this, but I purchase a flight directly from fijiairways.com, it does say points earned on AA. Does this include EQM? I thought I read somewhere else that the flight had to be booked as an AA Codeshare to get EQM, but now I can't find anything on that. Regrettably, aa.com and fijiairways.com prices for the same flights are significantly different.
