Link[/u] to earning AA miles on JL page on aa.com
Please see useful information including which JL affiliates can be used for AAdvantage award travel, Domestic Japan Awards, etc. in Post #1.
Please note the different earnings on international and domestic flight fare codes. Also note "JL flights 53 and 54 between Tokyo Narita and Nagoya, and flights 51 and 52 between Tokyo Narita and Osaka Kansai are considered international flights for the purpose of mileage accrual."
As always: Travel ticketed as an American Airlines marketed flight (booked as an AA flight number) and operated by Japan Airlines will earn AAdvantage base miles, Elite Qualifying Miles (EQMs) and Elite Qualifying Segments (EQSs) (and after 1/1/16, EQDs) according to the AA mileage accrual chart.[/quote]

GUIDE to redeeming AA miles for Japan Air Lines awards:
- JL awards are now shown show and can be booked on aa.com
- See post #1 for useful information on JL awards
- [AwardNexus (free to FlyerTalk members for basic searches) will also reveal, and (for a fee) alert, on JL award seats
- AA awards on JL must be MileSAAver (AAnytime awards are only available on AA marketed and AA operated flights)
- There are no onerous fuel or carrier-imposed surcharges using AAdvantage miles for awards using JL
- JL initially releases awards 330 days out at 10:00 am JST / 18:00 PDT / 17:00 PST time
- JL now releases awards 360 days out. However AA will not allow you to book them until 330 days out.
- JL updates award and revenue seat award availability once daily ~09:30-12:00 Pacific time
- JL may release 0-2 F and 0-4 J award seats initially; until taken they remain available up to three months from release
- No further seats are likely to be released until shortly (~14 days) prior to scheduled departure - but the last F seat will be retained for sale, not released into award inventory
- No stopovers are allowed on AA awards. Connections may be as long as 23:59.
- Only JAL Mileage Bank members can waitlist awards
- All awards for domestic Japan will default to Economy (including international F or J award with domestic segments); these can often be upgraded at reasonable cost at the ticket counter in the Japan connecting airport
- If JL & QF are showing availability, but AA can't see it, try calling the Australia AA center ( https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30715035-post810.html ) as it may be a point-of-sale issue
Please refrain from posting questions about AA award redemptions on JL in the JAL Mileage Bank forum.
Information from AA AAdvantage and JAL Mileage Bank fora.

Advice please
Have OMA/LAX/HND 69k in J arriving 8/15 on hold until tomorrow.
We plan on 5 nights in Kyoto and 5 nights in Tokyo - Hilton
I called today to add HND-ITM, CSR said not available, from reading this thread it sounds like I should do nothing now just keep checking; worst case simply buy that leg for $72 on ANA/JL?
fly/train to Tokyo 8/20
We are ok flying Y home on 8/26 from HND/NRT if J doesnt open up in the next 11 months

I lost 2 JAL J by removing AA award hold and trying to book again. It appears that only time you are guranteed to have the expired or cancelled tickets back in the award inventory is when you see the same award ticket still available. For example, if I see 1 seat of JAL J at 60k miles, if I cancel my J at 60k, the inventory becomes 2. I did that several times to book multiple seats under the same booking.

Could this have something to do with why availability has been so scant/unpredictable lately?

Compared to the other option JAL is wide open; and JAL is top of the list for aspirational options. I have JAL in First booked April and July. As noted elsewhere, to TYO is much easier than from TYO. As of late, good "from" options include AA via PVG and Asiana via ICN.

The issue is Asia in general. Zero ANA or EVA or SIN. United business class is 200K. Zero Chinese airlines. JAL does ve availability. AA does have availability via TYO but at 450K. Endless options to / from India. Europe is managable.

When China re-opens flights. Only 12 roundtrips per week right now between China and the US for airlines from each country, expanding to 18 and 24. Nowhere near what it was pre-pandemic (150 flights).

It is strange that US-Japan is still fairly wide open though, but Japan-US is tougher. Capacity and demand are what they are, but I would expect them to be balanced in both directions.

Call AA and ask. Determine availability in advance. Zero options to change online, so your only opton is to call and ask (or cancel and rebook w/ segment). Zero guarantees the NRT-SEA will be available if you cancel, though.

Anyone else book a JAL partner ticket recently? When I booked the agent said status should move from on request to ticketed within the next 2 days. Its been 4, and still showing on request. Didnt know if anyone had a better estimate on ticketing times. Ive had a ticket in the past with Qatar that didnt get ticketed fast enough and it dropped, so I didnt want it to happen again.

If you can find both segments when you book, and you can't book the connection online (that happens sometimes; it doesn't always show the connection in the search results) it's better to not hold anything and call to book it. Holding it just makes things more complicated for the agent.
