It's been almost 3 years since the the last post. What's currently the cheapest method to keep an AA account active?

Likely AA eShopping - just spend $1 at Groupon through that portal.

Thx. So click on Groupon through AA eShopping, log into my Groupon account, and buy something? What can I buy for $1 through Groupon? Is this confirmed to work? I thought it won't work with Canadian based websites. I thought about doing Avion to AA, but it's a minimum of 5000 Avions and that would only give me 3500 AA. No thx.

I've bought $1 discount coupons to a random barber shop in California from Groupon through Delta's portal - towards some Delta promotion.

EDIT - here's an example: https://www.groupon.com/deals/hart-m...6-be2345525108

So you've never used AA's portal before?

I have, but with iTunes, which no longer seems to be an option.

The various shopping portals to Groupon is a very easy way to earn a couple of points/miles for expiry reset or as a hit for various promos.
