MODERATOR'S NOTE

N.B. The "51 mile grace window" has been eliminated as the US Dividend Miles and AAdvantage frequent flyer programs merger came to fruition in 2015. Strict mileage will henceforth determine how many 500 mile upgrade "stickers" are needed to upgrade a flight. E.g. a 1,514 mile flight will require four "stickers" going forward after the FFP merger.

500-mile / Sticker Upgrade "51-mile Grace Window" GONE (consolidated)

That segment is listed as 1,514 miles in the AA schedule. So, why does it only require 3 upgrades?

As noted in the AA FAQ at the top of the forum, there is was a 51-mile grace window for 500-mile sticker upgrades. This grace window applied to the total flight distance, not per 500-mile sticker upgrade. So:

1 sticker: 0-551 mi
2 stickers: 552-1051 mi
3 stickers: 1052-1551 mi
etc.

The definitive post from back in 2002:

Enjoy this undocumented benefit!

because AA has a 50 mile grace. 1500-1550 all require only 3. similarly, 1000-1050 requires 2, and anything under 550 requires one.

AA has a ton of undocumented benefits: e500 50 mile grace, lifetime status, challenges for various things, and a bunch of easter eggs around the system. Makes it fun flying AA for me...

Fortunately for us upgraders, AA does not require a full 500-miler for segments slightly longer than 500 mile multiples. ORD-LAS is one of those routes where the first class seat only costs 1500 miles (3 stickers/upgrades), with the 14 miles overage not needing another sticker.

TPA-ORD is another similar route at 1014 miles. 2 certs. ^^

Makes the MIA-ORD 3 cert at 1197 seem like a waste.

I believe DFW-ELP at 551 miles exactly is the most efficient use of a single sticker. Or at least tied for first.

Yeah, but then you'll be in El Paso.

Well, at least it's better than Juarez

Sorry, a couple of posts back, someone mentioned "undocumented"

STL-DFW is 550 miles and requires only one sticker.

While we may get a break on that front, we lose out on food service. While AA publishes a flight time of two hours exactly on this flight, there is never any snack or meal service as only flights of OVER, not inclusive, of two hours qualify.

And of course DFW-LAS lies just above that threshold.

agreed ... but at least you have the option (schedule permitting) to burn those on the 777.

So does DFW-RDU. Flew RDU-DFW-LAS and back all the time. Always a frustrating use of stickers, especially on the eastbound where the combined flight time was barely over four hours yet took six stickers. Compare to three stickers for the nearly four hour flight from ORD-LAS.

I hate the mile grace not stacked up, for example, 1650 miles should still count as three instead of four. That's why I always feel a little hesitated when you have some flights that count around 1100, 1599, or whatever. I don't wanna use another 500-mile upgrade just because of that.
