MODERATOR'S NOTE

N.B. The "51 mile grace window" has been eliminated as the US Dividend Miles and AAdvantage frequent flyer programs merger came to fruition in 2015. Strict mileage will henceforth determine how many 500 mile upgrade "stickers" are needed to upgrade a flight. E.g. a 1,514 mile flight will require four "stickers" going forward after the FFP merger.

Do they calculate the mileage differently? Will I need to submit a request for the "grace window" once the flight is complete and the stickers are deducted?
Generally the stickers shown is the actual cost of the upgrade. AA is somewhat inconsistent counting mileage network wide. According to the routemap JFK-SDQ is 1,555 miles, which would explain the 4 stickers.

Change to DFW-LAS?

Hi - long time lurker on these boards (and beneficiary of all the great advice) but first time posting.

Just booked DFW-LAS for June 28-July 2 and noticed the 500 mile upgrade requirement had dropped to 2 each way. Anyone know how recent a change this is? I recall needing 3 chits each way as recently as early April.

I'm seeing the same for my DFW-LAS flight for June 16. All the tools I use show 1055 miles - but I'm not complaining!

Hey that's good news ^. Wish they'd do the same for RDU-DFW which is 1,062 miles

Due to budget cuts, you will now be shown to the door on final approach, four miles from landing.

That would be great news for those of us that fly DFW-LAS regularly!

Did the plates shift? DFW-LAS only requiring 2 stickers?

PLAT companion has a reservation on DFW-LAS which is showing only 2 stickers required. This has always been one of the frustrating routes at only 5 miles over the threshold at 1055 miles. Did something change?

I was thinking about this and no matter where AA draws the line, people are going to be unhappy. They have arbitrarily picked 51 miles; everyone who is 52 miles and over complain; they pick 100 miles, everyone 101 and over complains and so the cycle continues...

Of course this finally happens after all the trips where I've blown 3 stickers. Hopefully it lasts until my fall/winter LAS trips.

Someone long ago had an interesting idea that would save all of us the heartache of this post: basically giving us upgrades that matched 1 for 1 the amount of miles we were actually flying in an upgraded cabin. So simple, and yet so NOT simple.

I actually thought of the same idea myself around the same time. I've long wanted this to be how things worked though if it was the case, would you sell individual "miles" towards upgrades, say at 1.6 cents per mile, or still in blocks of 500?
