AA miles awards: using / redeeming AA miles on Qantas (QF)

The basics:
QF releases their awards from 353 days out to QF FF's and some ffp's (Amadeus CRS). So at the 331 days (~Sabre CRS) AA for award release there are scant seats left. They tend to add more much closer to the day of flight, if there are seats available.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: For US flights it has been my recent, but limited experience that QF releases award availability around 10-11 months from departure. Consider searching for one seat in F and one in J as well.

Consider alternate cities. E.g. Flights to BNE might be easier to book with AA miles than SYD or MEL, so adding a segment from BNE might give you a trip denied by connecting in SYD. You might have to remind AA reservationists, because they might not consider BNE.

Consider alternate airlines, such as HA from HNL, TN via PPT, FJ via NAN, etc.

N.B. Travel via Honolulu, or Asia (e.g. HKG or NRT), will require two awards.

aa.com occasionally may report "phantom availability" of premium awards on Qantas.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: Conversely, aa.com occasionally may not show available Qantas awards. Use BA's search tool, QF's search tool, or service like ExpertFlyer to see availability. Call in to ticket.

It only displays flights where there is a seat in at least one cabin. If there is no availability on the flight in any cabin, then the flight will not be displayed.
The aa.com oneworld and Other Airline Award Chart may be seen here, for required miles and restrictions on connections.

Note: Reservation speculating, or tying up award space to "flip" in (or out of) Coupon Connection will not be tolerated. If you have an "extra" reservation, simply cancel or refund it. This will not be allowed in this forum either.

Qantas Routes
To be updated
SYD to LAX, DFW, HNL and YVR. SYD SFO restart delayed
BNE to LAX
MEL to LAX and DFW

Notes

During low seasons some routes may not have flights every day.
Not all flights/routes have first class. Only the QF A380 aircraft have has first class.
QF have retired all B747's and sent them to the Mojave desert (July 2020)

AA.com still showing phantom F awards . Shows on AA, but not on BA or QF (and not with two different AAgents by phone).

what date for example? is aa.com incorrectly showing Premium Economy (Z class) rather than First (P class) perhaps?

15 November MEL-LAX

And that looks like the case.

Is there any consistently reliable search engine (paid or otherwise) to identify QF First and Business availability using Aadvantage miles? I've located First seats by calling in (twice) when no availability was showing on either the AA, BA or QF websites but that was very tedious and time-consuming. Any suggestions?

Quick question (I have searched but not found the answer) - can I book Jetstar flights using AAdvantage miles?

No

It used to be possible to book QF codeshares on JQ, but now JQ is no longer bookable

Rats! No-one else flies direct from ADL to CNS. Thanks for the reply and for all your contributions to FT Dave.

You would be able to take a connecting flight if you want to use miles to fly domestically

For ADL-CNS, the routing rules permit a single connection in either Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney

Ok I may be confused, but can I book any Qantas flight with anytime points? If so that is less points needed than booking an AA flight at full points.

If you're referring to AAnytime award level, then no. Most partner space is available at sAAver award only. However, it's possible that sometimes you will see a combination of AA and partner flights in connecting itineraries show up as AAnytime, but that's just because the AA flight requires the AAnytime price.

I got a business award seat on QF 8 (DFW - SYD). I was really hoping to get first class (for 20k more its worth it). However, there seems to be no first class award available. On EF it shows there are about 8 first class seats open. Does saver award space open up more as it gets closer? If there are first class seats available on day of departure, is it possible to upgrade to first class or do they generally not release those for awards even if its emtpy?

Thanks!

From my experience, First Class flies out pretty full.

Qantas offers upgrades here - http://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/upgrade/global/en

It's an award ticket. For example I see for tomorrows flight there are 4 open seats on F.. My question is if there are open seats, are you able to upgrade using miles through AA?

No. You need to hope QF releases an F award seat. It's not unheard of, but it is relatively rare. If you're within 60 days of departure, it is very, very unlikely. Just have to keep searching...
