AA miles awards: using / redeeming AA miles on Qantas (QF)

The basics:
QF releases their awards from 353 days out to QF FF's and some ffp's (Amadeus CRS). So at the 331 days (~Sabre CRS) AA for award release there are scant seats left. They tend to add more much closer to the day of flight, if there are seats available.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: For US flights it has been my recent, but limited experience that QF releases award availability around 10-11 months from departure. Consider searching for one seat in F and one in J as well.

Consider alternate cities. E.g. Flights to BNE might be easier to book with AA miles than SYD or MEL, so adding a segment from BNE might give you a trip denied by connecting in SYD. You might have to remind AA reservationists, because they might not consider BNE.

Consider alternate airlines, such as HA from HNL, TN via PPT, FJ via NAN, etc.

N.B. Travel via Honolulu, or Asia (e.g. HKG or NRT), will require two awards.

aa.com occasionally may report "phantom availability" of premium awards on Qantas.

2017.07.08 edit by FlyerTalkUserName: Conversely, aa.com occasionally may not show available Qantas awards. Use BA's search tool, QF's search tool, or service like ExpertFlyer to see availability. Call in to ticket.

It only displays flights where there is a seat in at least one cabin. If there is no availability on the flight in any cabin, then the flight will not be displayed.
The aa.com oneworld and Other Airline Award Chart may be seen here, for required miles and restrictions on connections.

Note: Reservation speculating, or tying up award space to "flip" in (or out of) Coupon Connection will not be tolerated. If you have an "extra" reservation, simply cancel or refund it. This will not be allowed in this forum either.

Qantas Routes
To be updated
SYD to LAX, DFW, HNL and YVR. SYD SFO restart delayed
BNE to LAX
MEL to LAX and DFW

Notes

During low seasons some routes may not have flights every day.
Not all flights/routes have first class. Only the QF A380 aircraft have has first class.
QF have retired all B747's and sent them to the Mojave desert (July 2020)

In fairness to the argument being made, it was pointed out that it was a QF9-> QF9 connection (or a QF1-> QF1 connection-- QFflight-> same#QFflight connecting in DXB in any case) for which the QF rule regarding availability-"circumvention" was being made, only.

But, yes, obviously the poster looking to do MEL-DXB-LHR-FCO can do so on one award, hopefully all can see now.

Just wanted to say - thank you to TheBOSman, Dave Noble, and ExecPlat for y'all's replies a few pages ago. Wife and I decided to spend a day in Sydney, thus avoiding the hassle/stress of the same day connection to AYQ. Appreciate y'all's insight though it was quite helpful!

Looking forward to our first visit to Australia!

Also - I've set EF alerts - but does anyone have any experience if QF releases F awards last minute CX-style? We snagged J awards for our return home but sure wouldn't mind F if it opens up! Flight is F9 and only 3/14 seats taken on the map (which I know doesn't mean squat) - but suggests we have a Lloyd Christmas chance!

Almost no chance. It is exceedingly rare for them to release within 60 days of departure. You might get the occasional one in the 60-120 days out range, although I don't know if this is extra release or simply cancellations of existing awards.

That said, don't be surprised at all if AA opens up close. I'd prefer QF F to AA F solidly, but would probably prefer AA F to QF J.

One day is enough to get a quick overview of Sydney and to hit up the major obvious touristy things (Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Bondi Beach). If you're spending time there later on, use that first day to get a feel for what might interest you in the future.

By all means set your EF alerts. It also pays to be flexible with date. It's often 1 seat that is made available though, if then.

Where do the F seats go? Qantas either sells them (perhaps unlikely), but they have their own Upgrade bidding options- http://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/upgrade/global/en
https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/fl...qantas-jetstar

I've flown QF F twice in the last month. Both flights went out with only 1 or 2 open F seats. Most of the other seats were filled in the upgrade window that QF publishes.

Good thought re: AA - unfortunately AA72 the day we return is already down to F1 (!!!) and our dates aren't flexible, but I'll set alerts for that one too - why not!

LAX-SYD first class trying to redeem

On AA's website, a couple of first class tix LAX-SYD have popped up in the past week. I tried to book but then it says they aren't available. Called the 800 and they don't see them. Week later, they still show online. Anyone experience this before or know how to book? Thanks in advance.

Had this problem a few weeks ago as well.

Do they also show on ba.com?
If so, please share sample dates via PM or post and I will try to advise.

I have seen AA having phantom availability issues on QF a bit recently. Unsure why

I've had this happen frequently lately with QF availability on AA.com.

Better to call AA or to use Expertflyer.com- that will show the real availability.

I received an automated ticket confirmation email from AA with "Ticket Issued: Mar 1, 2016" for a QF booking I originally made last year for travel next month.

The PNRs (both AA and QF), flight number and seat are all unchanged. Any idea why AA would have issued a new ticket?

Did you ever receive a ticket before?

I had something very similar happy yesterday - there are 2 passengers on one PNR (QF-CX-IB) and the e-tickets were definitely issued a couple of months ago (I have e-ticket numbers) then yesterday one of the tickets was re-issued / not both. Double checking on CMT - I see one passenger with a new e-ticket number and the other with their original e-ticket number. I was planning to wait a couple of days to see if AA re-issued the other one. If not, then call and find out what's going on.
