AAdvantage eShoppping by Cartera Commerce
Using, earning miles, problems, etc. (Consolidated thread)

American Airlines is not the contact for Cartera / AAdvantage eShopping .

AAdvantage eShopping FAQs and an e-contact form can be found via the "Contact Us" link at the bottom left corner of the home page.

If you have trouble getting purchases to track, there's also a browser extension to help.

Notes about Giftcards.com:
  • A separate thread exists for discussing Giftcards.com and likely has more data points than this generic thread.
  • Purchases from giftcards.com earn miles on the first $2,000 spent in the named calendar month, meaning for example between March 1st and March 31st. [Note: as of Aug 2023, the $2k limit is per order, not per purchase]
  • Giftcards.com has had various limits over the years, and it was always by calendar month.
  • Some data points show the $2,000 monthly limit is not always enforced. [Note: as of Aug 2023, the $2k limit is per order, not per purchase]
  • In 2022, larger orders track more slowly, and you may need to wait a full month to see miles. Strong advice from the thread is to make multiple small purchases (say under $300) rather than large ones to avoid the dreaded "manual review"
(Copied from the LP thread wiki): Once you click through the AAdvantage eShopping portal to a vendor offer and make a purchase, you will eventually get the associated miles posted to your AAdvantage account as both redeemable miles and Loyalty Points. If the merchant advertises an increase in the miles per dollar spent, you'll earn the higher amount in both redeemable miles and an equal number of Loyalty Points. The same applies if a merchant advertises a higher fixed amount per purchase, rather than a per dollar amount. Examples of this would appear on the portal as, "Extra miles. Was 1 mile/$. Now earn 3 miles/$" or "Extra miles. Was up to 3700 miles. Now up to 6200 miles." However, if the website advertises a "Limited-time bonus offer" for "bonus miles" after meeting a spending threshold, that bonus will only post as redeemable miles and not Loyalty Points. If a bonus is offered for some site-wide activity such as 1000 miles for installing an extension, or 500 miles for enrolling in the portal, or 2000 miles for meeting a spending threshold across multiple merchants, the bonus will only post as redeemable miles and not Loyalty Points.

Some anti-virus software silently blocks tracking, and you may want to consider disabling it for your purchase.

I made a significant purchase (about $1,800) in December using the portal and a site promising 12 miles/dollar. Not only I didn't get the 5,000 miles bonus, I am still fighting to get the approximate 21,500 miles I was supposed to get from the purchase. I received an e-mail on Dec. 30 telling me it was still being processed. Nothing yet. This shopping portal is the worst!

They are usually pretty responsive for me, but I do use the portal quite a bit (over 160,000 miles earned in 2015 through the portal). It says when I login that I am a VIP eShopper. When I have to email in for credit, which is more frequently than I would like, I generally get a response within 24 hours. They also follow up consistently.

I recommend using Google Chrome when using the portal. That seems to work the best for me (90% success rate without having to email in). Also, when you click through and the store page opens up, make sure the page fully loads. Check the status bar, as even though the page appears fully loaded in a lot of cases, the browser is still loading the tracking cookies in which ensure you get credit.

You can go onto your eShopping account, click account, and then recent store visits. Make sure your shopping trip actually shows up.

I did want to ask, iTunes used to post pretty consistently, but my last few iTunes purchases haven't shown, and I click through the portal every time. Anybody else?

Check on your eShopping account to see if the click-through is showing. If it isn't, they likely won't credit it. If it does, submit the claim, and then when you submit the form, upload your receipt using the link. Expect a response within 48 hours, with credit usually posting shortly after unless more information is required.

When submitting the claim form, just say you shopped and am not seeing credit. Clearly mention the merchant name, date, and order amount.

Follow the same rules as contact AA Customer Relations (straight and to the point, no stories required) and they are fairly efficient.

Beginner question:
I have used AAdvantage eShopping a few times and frequently buy songs from iTunes. I have always accessed the iTunes Store through iTunes itself. What are the mechanics of accessing iTunes through Catera instead of the iTunes program? Also I have a gift card balance on iTunes, will that get miles from Catera?

As long as you click through AAdvantage eShopping, you'll be fine. Payment method doesn't matter. The link online will automatically open iTunes on your desktop and load the information in.

I use iTunes a lot, and I always receive credit. To ensure that there is no issue, however, I always make sure that iTunes is closed before I click through. That may be an unnecessary step, but I'm not going to fix what isn't broken.

Not only do gift cards work to earn miles, their purchase through the Apple Store earns miles, too. I always stock up on them when there is a 3xmiles bonus for Apple Store purchases. So I get 3 miles/dollar buying the cards, then 3xmiles using their value.

As an all-Mac business owner, I pay for my Apple Store purchases using my Barclay's Apple Rewards card. That earns 3 Apple Rewards points/dollar on top of the miles earned through Cartera.

The entire site is a joke. I made a $275 purchase for 6 miles/dollar. There was an initial problem with it being back ordered, but it was fixed within a few minutes. AA never awarded me my miles and I have contacted then and complied with the paperwork they needed me send in 3 DIFFERENT TIMES. At one point I did request for a way to speak with a representative, and the QUICKLY responded that they do not have that service. It was within the same emails as with my prior issue and they never addressed it. Apparently AA only feels the need to correct problems that would directly affect them. They have terrible representation to their customers and no sense of responsibility. THIS ENTIRE PROGRAM IS A SCAM AND DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU OVERSPEND ON PRODUCTS THAT YOU CAN FIND ELSEWHERE FOR CHEAPER!!!!!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS FRAUDULENT SITE!!!!!!!!!!!

Why would you spend more money than you needed to just to get miles? Cash saved is almost always worth more than miles earned.

I hear your frustration and have had issues in the past but Cartera has done a good job of fixing their past problems. Did you contact them? AA cannot fix a Cartera shopping portal issue.

So let me get this straight.
This is your first post, and you decide to simply ignore other people's good experience in this post and claim outright this is a scam website?
Have you ever considered you did something wrong or it was a fluke?
All companies make a mistake. You declaring

"THIS ENTIRE PROGRAM IS A SCAM AND DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU OVERSPEND ON PRODUCTS THAT YOU CAN FIND ELSEWHERE FOR CHEAPER!!!!!!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS FRAUDULENT SITE!!!!!!!!!!! "

only shows you are being impatient and childish rather than proving there's problem with this portal.

I seem to run into the same problem with all my purchases through the portal. You need to check if they are posted, you need to contact them when they are not (often), you need to send them electronic copies of your receipts, you need to wait some more to know if your miles will get posted. Seems almost like too much work. I was wondering if other people here are having the same experience, or if they get their miles posted automatically, without hassles: the way is supposed to be.
I have the same thing happen about 30% of the time.
