M80 vs. M83

I have looked around and can not seem to find the difference between these two planes. Taking a long intercontinental later this month and have the option of the M80, M83 or 738. Will probably upgrade with stickers so wondering which has the best Business/First.

Thanks

I would guess the new 738 cabin, but the EX-TWA MD-83s aren't bad - no IFE like on the MD-82s, but I find the business/first more spacious than on the '82s.

Per wikipedia the MDs are the same dimensions, just different engine configs:

MD-83 (DC-9-83)
Long-range version with 21,000 lb thrust JT8D-219 engines.

Ex-TWA -83s had more comfortable seats than the AA F seats. Problem is, AA bought some -83s (not acquired from TWA), so unless you're adept at identifying ex-TWA -83s, you run the risk of getting a nAAtive -83 with its less comfortable seats.

My advice is to go with the 738, which has more comfortable seats than the MD-80s.

Inded. All things being equal, I don't know why anyone would chose an MD80 over a 738 in F (in Y, it's more debateable).

Before AS got rid of their Mad Dogs last year... I was fortunate enough to ride in F on one of them... so quiet I could hear the air rushing over the A/C, or when we decreased speed, increased, etc... ) So I understand this could be a nice perk... but a good pair of Bose QC2's (or if you are lucky QC15's ) solves that issue too ^

I'm not aware of any intercontinental flights on Mad Dogs, nor am I aware of any transcontinental flights on them, except maybe some direct (1-stop) services.

Well, there are some short routes (1 1/2 hr to 2 hr) that I probably like the Mad Dog more, I find it climbs a bit quicker than a 738, plus I'm not that fat to really need that extra 1.5 inches between the M80 and 738. Plus it's possible to get internet on M80 which I prefer more than the enterainment system anyway. Anything over 4 hrs and I actually like the 757 more, because I feel less stuffed on that than a 738 or M80 especially on longer routes.

As for any long routes for M80, the longest ones I thought was ORD-SEA/SFO/LAX and DFW-SEA/YYC which is all around 1700 miles. One direct transcon flight I knew before was SEA-ORD-EWR, maybe the OP was suggesting that?

Farther from the engines, but, more high pitch and loud slipstream noise.

I'd certainly opt for a 738.
