Don't forget the third main reason: When B6 announced the removal of the first row, aft of the emergency exits, B6 had just paid the FAA a fine of $100k for its failure to provide any in-cabin wheelchair stowage. Removal of the first row (phase 1 of its MRTC plan) gave it room for that wheelchair. The removal of the second row (forward of the emergency exits) a couple years later (reducing seat count to 150) permitted it to lower the FA headcount, in addition to reduced fuel stops.

Right. Completely forgot about them because I haven't been on one since 2002 and that was long before I was an AA FF thinking about upgrades. The new 738s will take that honor as soon as the A300s are gone though.

I'd say it's more reflective of the sorry state of journalism in the US.

MD80's through 2024
From the AA info today
For the MD lovers they will be around for a very, very, very long time.
So American has resumed taking 737-800 deliveries, primarily as replacements for its aging fleet of 272 McDonnell Douglas MD-80s. Those MD-80s won't be going away entirely any time soon -- American has leases on some MD-80s all the way out to 2024. But, over time the 737-800 will fill the role of domestic workhorse in the American fleet

How about under seat storage ?
Great about the overhead, but does adding the AC eat even further into underseat storage ?
That area has been so eaten into its only good for shoes, blanket and pillows.

I'm on a 738 tomorrow, ORD-LAX, departing 11:10 am (flt 1247). Does that mean I'm on a new plane?

I'll be a little sad to see the MD-80s go. Seat 20B is the best in coach, and the lack of noise up front is great!
But I'll be much happier to see the new t.v. screens! I think they are LCD, but I could be wrong. Much better than the old screens in the middle of the row.

Did anyone notice that USA Today reported AA will be receiving 76 of the 727-800's? I know that AA likes the retro theme on some of its planes but I think they're headed in the wrong direction with 727's.
