I'm turning Plat on the way back from a LHR-LAX flight. No lounge or status for the whole trip.

That's why it would be best for the OP to make sure it's in the system even if he doesn't have his card.
The status can't show up online (nor in the SABRE system) until the flight posts, which takes about 3 days after the actual flight.

Thus, NO-GO on getting the benefits for status within MINUTES of performing the activity that crosses the threshold.

I will earn the neccesary points to reach my plat challenge on the flight from HKK to SFO - And while in SFO i have a 3.5 hour layover. Since at that time i would technically be a PLAT - would i be able to get lounge access? Or will i need to wait until my flights post? (I fly back out to BKK 1 week later, so I should be good by then).

Thanks in advance!

Last august I did a PLT challenge.
I flew : LAS-DFW-NRT-LAX-LAS. I crossed the 10K points threshold over the Pacific
on the NRT-LAX flt.
On arrival at LAX , I went to the AC , explaind the situation to the agent.
She called ( I don't know who ) to verify and gave me access to the AC.
I ( obviously ) did not have a PLT card and the Boarding card for the LAX-LAS flt.
( received already in NRT ) did not show any elite status.
Good luck
Cheers

try calling ahead

you could try calling membership services ahead of time and asking that they watch your flights and manually key you in as Plat on the date that you'd make it, based on your iten. I did just this in a very similar situation a few years ago: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=452796
I talked to a very kind AAdvantage agent the week before, and explained that I would make Plat on the HKG-LAX segment. She looked at my iten, and she volunteered to upgrade me to Plat and rekey my iten while I was on the 14 hour LAX-HKG segment. So, the lesson is that you might not have to wait for your final flight to post to finish the Plat challenge, provided that you have a nice agent (like I did).
(OK, so I mistyped HKG-LAX--should have been LAX-HKG--but the point is the same.)

On the other hand, CX didn't realize the change immediately and I had a tough time in HKG when trying to enter the Wing/Pier. At least back then, manual changes did not push immediately to other OW partners.

two final points/questions:
1) do Partner EQPs still count towards AA challenges? I thought they changed this in 2007 so only AA flights count.
2) remember to have an agent re-enter your FF number on any existing itens so that your new status is recognized.
