Aa2547 jfk-fll 777

I was searching for flights on 1/3/09 from NYC to S. Fla and came across this..JFK-FLL on a 777 (flight 2547)! Is this a glitch in the system, or is AA actually planning on running this flight? Would be nice to catch the 777 on a hop like that..

I didn't think AA offered direct or n/s flights JFK to FLL, departure date did you see this show up for?

Well, his first sentence starts, "I was searching for flights on 1/3/09"

For the OP, that's the biggest flight number I have ever seen for a 777 flight on AA metal.

Maybe there was a charter to FLL, or it's something else that might be cruise related, and AA wants to grab some money instead of ferrying the plane back empty.

It's on the schedule, I would tend to think it is there on purpose.

The good news is the business class section is being sold for economy and is counted "preferred seating" for elites

I'd go for the upgrade to the int'l FC seats, if you are planning on flying it.

Good catch by the OP. Based on a quick EF search, it does appear to be a one-shot deal. Checking for a week around that flight, I could not find any other JFK-FLL flights or a return flight. I'll speculate (and this is pure speculation) that the JFK-FLL flight is due to some special contractual obligation (perhaps, for example, in connection with some large group traveling to FLL for a cruise) and that they'll shuttle the aircraft to MIA after the JFK-FLL flight to get it back into the regular rotation.

There is another unusual 777 flight (MIA-JFK) on Dec. 19. It is scheduled AA 2548.

a 6pm arrival in FLL sounds late for a cruise departure

My bet is something related to the NCAA national championship football game in Miami a few days later.

Probably a charter going back for all the NY Network execs and advertisers.

Scary. Is the runway at FLL long enough?

Depends on fuel load and weight (# of passengers and luggage/cargo).
It can NOT do full/full with 9k feet.

Yes.

South African Airways flew to Fort Lauderdale non-stop from Cape Town until September 2001.

Ok, but does FLL have gates that can handle it? I was on a VS flight from LHR to MIA in 2006 that got diverted to FLL due to weather. We pulled up to a gate, but the jetway couldn't fit the plane (Airbus A340-600). To add insult to injury, we weren't pulling up to deplane, but to open a door so the plane could be refueled.

Then when they finally got a door open another way, and when it was all said and done, they didn't have a big enough tow bar to back us up, so they had to drive one up from Miami (along with the new crew that was waiting at MIA, as our crew had gone illegal by this time).
