I dont know when you are flying, but most low cost carriers publish fare between $800 - $1200 in the off-peak season to India. Your friend was right in the fare dropping to match those, if those other airlines were holding at that fare.

Another way to look at it is since your friend had the money to buy biz, you could have just let him wait and even if the fare increases, it would only cost him a couple hundred bucks at worse, which he has to spend. As others mentioned.
