Help Needed UK - GIG
At present I am trying to find the cheapest possible way of flying out to Rio De Janeiro from the UK asap (preferrably Manchester), utilising those 35,366 air miles I have accrued to date. My intention is to stay there for a period of six months. Matters of convenience and comfort are very much secondary to cost.
Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I can't immediately see how 36K miles are going to be of any help at all unless you use them to do a co-pay + miles upgrade on a paid economy ticket?
You don't even have enough for an award flight from North America to Rio so I don't think the miles are going to be a lot of help for the basic flight costs.

Welcome to FT addio.
By my calculations, the 'cheapest' free ticket you could get UK-GIG would be 80k miles in off peak times...That would be 2 40k awards, one for UK-USA and the other USA-GIG. And it would have to be during the period Oct. 15 - Nov. 30 or Mar. 1 - May 15, when the off peak award periods are the same.
If you picked up an extra ~4k miles to get you to 40k, you could get halfway on miles. For example, purchase a UK-USA ticket in November when the fares are cheaper, then use your 40k miles for an award ticket USA-GIG.
That's about the only thing I can come up with.

I recall a thread (maybe 6 or 8 months ago?) that explained how to purchase a ticket using a combination of $$ and miles. I've searched FT and AA.com and can't come up w/the correct search criteria to find it. Maybe someone else remembers the details and can find the thread/link.

But it looks like the last date for claiming a reduced mileage award is 30 September this year after which they are being discontinued

Much like Gareth Barry's proposed transfer to Liverpool what you currently have to offer is not quite enough. Like Villa the ball is very much in AA's court so at the very least what you are offering will have to increase by 10% or so to 40k. Even then it will require some add-ons in the form of $$$ and rather than happening asap the move will likely be delayed to mid Aug. possibly even Sept. 1.
Thanks for that, fellow flyer. I found your analogy most poignant.
Clearly I will have to sell before I can buy in order to balance the books, although unfortunately I have no dashing young spanish forward who I might hock to the highest bidder (in fact the entire squad is looking somewhat depleted at present).
Furthermore, as I have learnt to my own cost, one must be careful not to incur the wrath of an obstreperous Irishman, as they can prove particularly unforgiving...

The fine print states that "all other aadvantage award rules apply" which sounds like the expedite fees are applicable, and IIRC from a previous thread, these tickets do not earn miles.

Sounds like the whole project will be expensive with or without 36k miles to use.
I would maybe consider to check the current fares from the UK to GIG and purchase a ticket.
