Saw passenger sneak into 777 business (or F) class. Does this happen often?

I've Seen This Happen on Delta
Last summer, my wife and I were on a DL flight JFK-FRA, sitting in a half-empty Business Elite cabin on so-called PMU upgrades waiting to push back, when we were told by the flight crew that 10 passengers were "stuck in security" and we were going to wait for them. 30 minutes later, these passengers start to stream on board, and just as the last two, a man and a woman, step on board, the button is pushed and the front door begins to close. These two slip into seats 3 C and E; not even 5 seconds passed before a no nonsense middle aged female FA rousted them and consigned them to stools and ropes (i.e., Delta economy).

So, a couple of weeks ago, I'm sort-of-comfortably ensconcsed in seat 10D on AA 98 ORD-LHR prior to take-off, and a guy sits down in 10B, then moves to empty 10A following take-off.
When the obviously experienced FA comes by to take entree orders, he asks the other passenger his name - "Evans" - and politely indicates that that name isn't on his list.
"Oh, I bought a $500 upgrade at the gate [obviously confusing AA with UA]" - his boarding pass, of course, showed 21-something, and he was then politely escorted back to his seat.
The FA later told me "this happens all the time," which actually sort of amazed me.
Does this type of thing EVER work? (I was reminded of this by the parallel thread regarding scamming into the AC for free.)

Always thought the sneaking into F/J was more of a myth. However, on a Wednesday very delayed JFK/MIA flight a pax in a very nonchallant manner sits down in F. FA immediately knows what is up and the man is escorted to his proper cabin and seat. Are people really that dumb!
Unless there is a consequence for this, people will continue to do it.

Have to ask the OP, if as indicated after the guy moves..then it would appear that both seats 10A and 10B are empty..so did you stay in the center 10D or move over?

You'd think since HA can charge $10 for a digiplayer with the cc machine, AA could figure out how to charge $1000 seat upgrade on the spot.

Been awhile since I've seen the movie, but for her help with the on board bomber, didn't the airline award her a lifetime free travel pass?

Obviously all of these stories are about people who got caught trying to take a seat in a higher class of travel than entitled to. If they hadn't been caught nobody would ever know about it, and the incident wouldn't be reported here. We have no way of knowing how many people actually get away with this sort of thing. For all we know, there may be a large number.

What is ridiculous is the idea that a passenger on a coach ticket can walk into F and the airline cannot collect a cent for it.

Flew DFW-ORD-CDG coach and the guy next to me said he was moving up to J so that he could get a nice meal and some much needed rest... when I told him that they would see that he wasn't on the manifest and send him straight back he said "don't worry, I do this all of the time.... they (I guess the FA's) know me." He never came back. At least I got an empty seat next to me on that flight
On a side note... sneaking into the AC is unbelievably easy. I would never do it... that's stealing in my opinion.... but I know that it can be done at any AC on any given day if you know the trick. Sorry Jetsfan.... don't PM me.

There is (or at least was a few years ago) service from JFK-Cuba. You just had to have the proper license from the US OFAC to get on it.
