I would expect for STL to take another hit on both frequencies and switch some more MD80's to RJ's.

RJs are inefficient gas hogs in today's economy. In many cases, the MD80s are better to operate.

AA is trying to move more of the St. Louis-based TransState RJs to Miami, but they are facing a lot of reluctance for unions who fail to grasp basic economics.

*Significant reductions in the little remaining SJC RJ flying

As a former heavy user of SJC, I had a feeling this was coming. Presuming they leave us with some service somewhere, I just wish they would go all out one way or another: either more AE flights to LAX (early AM, late PM) for better connections there, or do away with AE altogether if they must and give us a decent bank of DFW and ORD dailies (now down to 2 ORD/day). Make it either a full-fledged feeder into all the banks of LAX flights or give us a little more frequency to the hubs.

That's just plain invention. AMR's 10-K disclosure is extremely clear that award redemptions do not displace revenue flying. If they did to any significant degree, in the opinion of the auditors, then the company would have to record the liability value of miles at a huge sum, instead of peanuts. The marginal cost of any NetSaver domestic award ticket (by far the most popular redemption) is minimal, and in any event more than covered by award redemption fees collected.

Granted, AAnytime awards might displace revenue flying, but they are minuscule in number.

On the basis of this post, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...72#post9525272, 2 hours flight time and the IATA's Jet A index for 5/16/08, it costs $12.57 more per seat to fly an MD-80 DFW-ORD than it would a 737-800. That can clearly be worth it in terms of schedule frequency for business travelers.

By that same math, it means that the total fuel cost per seat for that MD-80 is only $52.14. With an average load factor of 75%, that should work out pretty well with average fares.

Some people take every opportunity to dump on MD-80s regardless of the math.

I don't know how AA maintains service to all cities with 12% service cuts, especially when major hubs look to be set for no reduction, but I know better than to argue routes with MAH4546.

I'm reasonably happy with MD80s myself, especially if I can sit AB, but another thing to consider is what is the maintenance cost/mile for an MD80 vs a 737? (Of course, you have to pay money on the 737 and I'll bet the 80 is more likely owned outright.)

I would have to see some hard evidence before believing this. It's been a long time since I've found a low fare to LAS. I've been paying 2x more than last year.

I echo this sentiment. I fly this route every 3 weeks, and there are always paid F people in the first class cabin when I get upgraded. Also, every flight leaves full, and I've seen my avg. price per ticket increase from $250 to $400+ in the last 3 months.

Significant cut-backs in point-to-point flying. (i.e: Bye-bye RDU-JAX/MCI/SDF).

I agree it will be difficult to maintain service to every city, but that is the plan. Oakland is the only station cut currently planned. Of course, what AA says today isn't necessarily what will happen on June 14th when we should be able to see the new schedules.

Agree. Tell me that I'm going to be sitting in coach and I will take an MD80 over a 737 any day.

Of course the opposite holds true if you tell me my upgrade is guaranteed to clear!
