Har har. Just because Puerto Rico is part of the USA doesn't mean it doesn't fall into the socioeconomic realm of Latin America.

Common accepted definition is that Latin America consists of Spanish speaking countries, plus Brazil, south of the United States.

Some islands, which are also countries, sometimes are in there (such as Haiti).

But all are

a) Countries
B) South of the US

PR is neither.

Well

A. PR has its own Olympic team
B. If A makes it a country, it is south of the US.

I have flown through San Juan many times on "O" fares, and I have never had problems with the miles. From all the experiences I have had, they treat San Juan as a domestic airport.

Overnight?? On a MR?
The last one I got in at 8:40AM and went back to MIA on the same plane.
Then I worked from the MIA AC all day, and caught the night flight to SFO.
For that trip, I actually got stuck with a SJU-MIA-ORD-SFO return, but paid the $25 to change it to SJU-MIA (morning), MIA-SFO (night)

On one MR, I used Hilton points and stayed from one morning until the next morning.

I just returned from SJU (SFO-JFK-SJU-MIA-SFO) with an overnight at the 4Pts Palmas del Mar. 2800 Starpoints plus $45, but you need to rent a car to get there as it is about 40 minutes south east of San Juan-assuming you don't get lost. Great beach, average rooms, great beach (with good bodysurfing.) I hate turnarounds so I prefer this, even with the added cost. Of course, I also got 1700 bmi miles for the Hertz rental, so at 2 cents per BD miles, almost a wash.
