AA Calls at 1am to reschedule flight; Rep asks my wife why she isn't cheerful
More a cute story than a complaint:
My wife is in Las Vegas (She tells me it's for work, so why did she go to the bank and get 100 $1 bills before leaving?) for a conference and flying home today. She got a call at 1 am this morning to tell her that her flight was canceled due to crew issues (^ to AA for calling.). She managed to mumble her way through the conversation, confirm that she was in F for the new flight and was about to hang up when the rep said to her, "Boy, you're not very cheerful, are you?"
At 1 am? I'm not sure if the rep was expecting a "hip hip hooray," but I think my wife had other words for her, most of them four letters in length.

If you called me at 1:00AM in Vegas I would be just getting rolling. (even during a biz trip)

Personally, I would prefer that AA always notify me as soon as possible about cancellations, especially for early-morning departures.
Why didn't she just turn off her phone at night? I would never go to sleep with my phone powered up. Or are you talking about a land line? (I don't have one, and even if I did, I wouldn't give it to AA because I'm almost never at home except to sleep.)

AA called me once at 2 am to let me know my 8 am flight was cancelled, but that they had rebooked me on the 6 am flight (ouch). So not much more sleep that night, but I did appreciate their efforts.

Your point is a good one, which is why we're not exactly in a position to complain. I just thought it was funny that the rep asked her why she didn't sound more cheerful at one in the morning.

Was it the Crown and Cokes or the Yo-11! that was making her mumble?

On the other hand my wife got a call at 3 a.m. to tell her that my 3p.m. flight was cancelled and they were rebooking me for the day after that. This was an automated announcement and the default was the rebooking. She, of course, called me to give me the info.
I'm sorry but this call could have waited until 7 or 8 a.m. I, of course, called aa to make alternative arrangements as I really needed to get back that day. They managed to accomodate me on a flight from a different airport. However, it turns out the information was incorrect. The flight was not cancelled but there were arrangements made to pick people up at the airport and deliver them to the same airport I was at. That is how I actually figured out what was going on. What a sloppy operation

(Although my wife and I, in maybe 8 or so trips to Vegas since we met, have gambled a grand total of 75 cents...they're probably not targeting us )
Cheers.

It sounds like you said your orignal flight changed airports, since you said arrangement were made to pick people up at the original airport and take them to the airport where you were.
I would rather be called as early as possible, in order to have maximum flexibility for the change.
It could be the difference between getting the flights and/or seats you want, and getting stuck on a bad flight or in a bad seat.

My SO was woken up yesterday at 6 am by a call - from UA, not AA, fortunately for this thread - to tell me my 7 am flight was running late and I had been rescheduled. If I didn't know that already, why would I still be home at 6? Shouldn't I already be at the airport? (I was.)

Doesn't she realize some people are vampires? grouse::grumble::
Plus, being booked on an earlier flight usually means your chances have been even that much more improved on having an on-time departure, then making a connection...saving you hours standing around in the airport trying to rebook yourself...
