Lifetime Gold Question
I just reached the million mile mark and achieved Lifetime Gold Status. (Thank you one and all for the applause.) Here's my question. Mainly I fly using miles. Does being Lifetime Gold help get an upgrade at the gate if there are seats available even with a reward ticket?

Nope.
Only money tickets can be upgraded.
Please read the FAQ on upgrades for more information on when, what, and how to work the AA upgrade system. (No need for information on why .)

Never say never (insert James Bond theme here), but NO, award tickets are not upgradeable. That doesn't mean that once in a blue moon you won't get an OP UP, because Coach is oversold, the moon is full, the FA loves your new hairdo, etc. But...in general, no.

But if you're booking domestic coach awards, being Gold (including Lifetime Gold) allows you to reserve exit row seats, which on some single-aisle planes are considered by some to be not significantly worse than up front (and for most are considerably better than most other coach seats on the plane, unless perhaps you have a near-empty plane where you can get 3-across to yourself -- but that you can't reserve ahead of time!).

I rarely pay for tickets as I get about 1 million miles a year from credit card spending and some CC churning. Believe me, using miles isn't what it used to be.... Fortunatley I use my miles for family/friends vacations so there is extreme flexibilty.

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, miles can also be used for F tickets. No waiting until the upgrade window, no worries that EXP's and PLT's will get all the upgrade seats, and no need to pay cash for stickers (which you aren't earning for free if flying on award tix).
A million miles a year is enough for 1 domestic F ticket a month.
