What about getting a reactivation challenge? I thought some reported doing that a while back. Might be better than spending $1430.
However, if they can't do a reactivation challenge, consider that 90K is a business class ticket to Europe.
Why is there even a question about whether it is "worth it"?

I clicked on the link and got to a page that said
Prices listed above are in U.S. dollars and do not include $30 per transaction processing fee.
You may transfer up to 60,000 miles and receive up to 15,000 miles per calendar year.

Bizarre, b/c when I click on the link, it says in red:

Share more miles. For a limited time, transfer up to 100,000 miles and receive up to 100,000 miles.
Offer ends December 31, 2008.

It seems you have to do it 4 times to get up to 100K, so that AA can get a $30 processing fee each time.

Depends on what they would be used for.

If wanting to do, say, a trip to Australia ( 125k ) , then if you can get availability, then $1430 is about the price of economy , but would get business class. purchase 7,000 miles and would be able to get a 1st class award.

That would be worth it to me.

I didn't see the red the first time. The page might have been cached. I was using a different computer the last time and I saw it.

I also noticed share and buy has also increased to 60K each until 12/31.
So, that give a possible way of quickly gaining 220K, if needed.
I am considering a European routing next summer that will cost me about $1800 per family member for Econ or 90K miles for business class.

Used this to reach 2M

Hi, I noticed this just yesterday and boy was it a good find! I was just 100K shy of the 2M mark, so my husband and mother in law shared miles, and I transferred a few thousand from hotel accounts, and presto, I will be at 2M as soon as everything posts. Yay! Was without a job for a few months this year and would not have qualified for Platinum for next year - first time in ten years. Working again now and wasn't looking forward to being Gold in 2009. Now I won't have to worry about it. Have always been worried the 2M lifetime platinum would go away before I got there. Hopefully it won't go in the next couple of weeks.

Oh, and there is the 25K limit on sharing so you do have to pay the processing fee each time.

My guess is that AA will not get the $30 fee on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time.

Same here. I clicked on the URL in post #16, the first time it was cached, the second time it appeared with the red caveat at the top. Odd.

Still, it's there now. Wonder if I can max this out this year...

I'd cope with paying 4 x the $30 fee -if only my family/friends had that many miles to share!

Talking

I got lucky! My husband hardly ever has miles. He doesn't travel with his job, so generally when we travel we use my miles. But there were a lot of cancellations that last time he did fly on an award ticket and they credited the miles back to him. My mother in law was actually trying to give her 28,000 miles away because they were getting ready to expire. So it all worked out. But it did cost more than just the $30 fee each time. You've got to pay $250 for each 25,000 miles, and lesser amounts for lesser miles. All in all I spent around $800. But it's worth it to me to keep the Platinum status as I am flying around in the sky next year!

Why would one pay to transfer 100,000 miles among a family instead of just doing the award redemption(s) from the account the miles are currently credited to?
