Not sure about giftees, but challenge qualifiers are treated the same as regular elites AFAIK.

Hey cool, a brand-new verb: to platinum
Usage examples:
Will you platinum this year?
I have already platinummed.
No you have not. You have only golded.
Just remember: everyone golds before they platinum.
To gold is better than to dirt.

But, as was already mentioned, most people who platinum (yes, nice verb) through a challenge should reach GLD naturally though.

I could be misunderstanding you here, but I just spoke with AAdvantage cust serv a few weeks back regarding simultaneous challenges and they are not allowed. According to the reps I spoke with (both times), you can only be enrolled in either a GLD or PLT challenge...but not both.

That's usually the case, but with some clever thinking, you can sign up for both. When I started travelling, I first signed up for the GLD challenge so I can get status quicker. When I completed my challenge, I called AA and pulled the who damsel in distress act. I said I signed up for the PLT challenge and I have GLD. The key is to act all confused and all. The guy quickly signed me up for the PLT challenge with the same GLD start date. I got to keep my GLD status while I continued my quest for PLT.

I realize that contradicting some of you is only going to irritate you, but bruised ego's aside, I rec'd more info on this. Visiting with my uncle this weekend who is AA Plat and UA Global Services, he says that neither airline has a "soft landing" at this point in time.
Anyone care to comment?

Au contrare mon frere. Challengers who platinum without a simultaneous Gold challenge only platinum. However (and to keep a completely dead thread alive a little more), the converse, thanks the the soft landing (answered within the first 3 posts) IS true. While one does not always gold before platinuming, one does always gold after platinuming, provided one does not maintain or exceed ones' platinumship (platinumhood?, platinumality? platinumitude?).
