Blah
8 500 mile upgrades for crossing 1MM? Do US accounts ever get SWUs? Is there any way to change where you are based before crossing the mark? I think I'll just change my address to my home in the UK if that's the case.

You can certainly try it, but there is a warning on the AA Wiki. See the notes on the address issue.
-5!!!
(Thanks for the info though...)

Just checked my account and I am officially GOLD! I hit 1,000,530 miles last week. A HUGE thank you to FT! All of the advice on churning(when we could), the latest Citi offer (business card), the bonus for converting SPG points this past summer, etc... I would not have known about any of this without this fantastic forum. Now I need to get DH from 757,000 to 1M. Thank you all again!

It depends on your luck. Before 2/28, good until Feb 2012, after 2/28, good until Feb 2013. Either way, I am sure you will have good use for them

One thing it is not valid for (and I realize that it is not relevant at present, but in case it comes up again)- the SWUs earned for the 125K promotions. These were given during a given year (forgot which month) and expired in February of the following year. These are the only SWUs I know of with less than a year of shelf life.
Cheers.

Followup question re SWU expiration
If someone becomes Ex-Plat early in 2011 based on DEQM for miles flown in 2010 for which the DEQM are awarded in 2011, do the SWU's in expire Feb 2012 or 2013?

SWUs related to EXP (re)qualification should have the same validity as the status, so I would say February 2012.

With respect to the SWUs and the email-letter, the clock to post does not start counting until they do a sweep which is most of the time on Sunday. After the sweep is when the system officially sees your MM status change, regardless of what your PTD online counter says.
For me it was.
Sweep +48hrs for SWUS
Sweep +72hrs for email

Sweep +4 weeks for the snail mail/ new card/ letter confirming "vested PLT"
Note, many here have reported this step taking less/more time. My letter for GLD took over 8 weeks.

2MM - yah!
I also crossed the 2MM mark on Oct. 25. I found the 4 SWU's in my account on Nov. 1 or 2, and then the email today. I am looking forward to getting the info in the mail that says "lifetime"......
Many thanks to FTers for invaluable information and strategies that helped me to get there. I made EXP for this year thanks to DEQM from last year, but won't reach EXP this year, so it will be great to have PLT lifetime. I have had fun trying to make the EXP travel and runs my new hobby in retirement, but funds and energy for MRs didn't quite hold up this year. No matter - I still love flying and planning and taking trips, and thanks to FT, DH and I are much better at it now.
Thanks all!
