Am I right about not having to pay taxes when using a voucher?

I seem to remember (and I have searched) that if you use a voucher from vol bump, you do not need to pay the taxes if the value of the voucher covers the price of the ticket without taxes. I just called the Exec Plat desk and the ConciergeKey line and both said that this was not true, that you always have to pay taxes.

I also seem to remember everyone discussing that this rule was little known. Can someone confirm the rule and give me some advice on how to argue it?

It's only certain of the taxes and you only don't pay them on the portion of the ticket for which the voucher is paying--although it also is dependent upon the voucher being coded correctly.

As of 2004, quoted from Flyertalk somewhere (I have it saved on my desktop):
I recently received very exact information from a very helpful AA employee and am sharing it here.

It concerns exactly how to go about getting a ticket which is purchased w/a Voluntary Denied Boarding Voucher without paying domestic taxes.

I hope you find it helpful. Here it is in its entirety:

as little as $0.01 base fare not covered by the
voucher, then US1 will be calculated on that amount. US2
will be collected in full if any base fare amount is not
covered by the voucher. If any amount of US1 is
collected, ZP applies. If any amount of US1 is collected, AY
applies.

Is AA suppose to charge you a ticketing fee when using a voucher to pay for air travel. During my last trip i have used the voucher and was charged a fee of $15.00 because ticketing was done at the airport.

chefcaw May 15, 2007 7:24 am

There is a ticketing fee for everyone but the ExecPlt. I think the fee is 10.00 if you mail the voucher to Milton, FL

Actually, I believe that this is no longer correct. It was discussed here and although people have had different experiences, it seems as if it should be the case.

As always, the best resource on AA vouchers is IceT's voucher FAQ:

This has also been consolidated into the Wiki:
