Changing date on ticket, will I have a problem getting my I fare back?
So I am in a situation where I will be traveling ORD-LHR-CDG-ORD over the summer. I decided recently I want to go to London two days earlier. I am on an I fare. There is an I seat available on that date. However, there are no more I seats on the return CDG-ORD flight. I am keeping the same flight, but would there have to be I inventory available for the re-issue, or is it possible to just change the outbound?

I don't think you can do this, because the whole ticket will have to be re-issued from scratch.

ultimately it depends on what the fare rule fine print says about changes.

I'm betting you will pay more

Oh, I'm fine with a few hundred bucks in change fees. What I don't want is to have to buy up to a D fare in order to make the change. The I isn't available anymore on the return (which I'm keeping), and I didn't know if that still had to be for sale in order to change the ticket and keep it in I class.

I'm not 100% sure this is how it'll work, but it's logical enough that I wouldn't assume you're out of luck (yet). Call AA.

You can change one segment, as long as same inventory is available then it should be just a straight change fee , plus any difference in fare value on that one segment. I often do these kinds of changes at the counter. I just sell the new segment and call tarriff who figure out the changes and check the fare rules, they store any price difference , you pay the agent who reissues the ticket there and then.
