Sponsoring someone else's upgrade so you can get your own?

Ok, so this is a scenario I've wondered about sometimes: You are awaiting an upgrade on a 3-class plane from Y to J. It's time to go, and you won't clear. Can you offer to sponsor an upgrade J to F of another pax to free up a J seat and get it? Would you already have to be number one on the upgrade list for this to work? And, would anyone consider it worth the miles/VIP?

Yes, I'm sure you could do this, of course they would upgrade someone else first into J.

I was very close to this situation last year. I was trying to upgrade JFK-LHR from Y to J on a B fare. J was sold out/checked in full. I was in the AC talking to one of the AC AAngels when I overheard a guy debating upgrading J to F on my flight. Both of the AC agents and I started trying to convince him to do it so I could get my upgrade- everyone would win. I almost offered to sponsor it but in the end he did it on his own. Of course this was about 5 minutes before we had to go to the gate... I was sweating it. I promptly used a drink chit to 'buy' him a quick drink to show my thanks...
