This is wrong. AA will let you check your bag in the morning.

Fingers crossed the other responses are from people flying JKF LHR then !!
MIA seems to be a law unto itself sometimes-maybe the South American routes are different.

The rule of whether a bag can be checked more than x hours in advance (x is generally 4) is determined by both the airport and the airline. At JFK last year T8/T9 allowed early check-in (AA flights and also AY and IB flights), while T7 did not (BA/CX/QF flights, and now also IB since its move to T7). T4 also did not. It is determined by the storage facilities within the terminal, some don't have much space for storing bags for many hours. The chance of pilferage and/or lost bags goes up by an order of magnitude for early check-in bags (something I learned the hard way, and I now keep bags in a hotel rather than at certain airports, JFK among them; though the last round of baggage handler arrests seems to have solved a lot of problems).

Thank you-that appears to explain the confusion.
I've decided not to risk it-especially as I've found a very good deal on a Times Square hotel 3 blocks from the theatre which is very little more than an airport hotel.
Many thanks to everyone. I will make a point of asking the current the situation and posting when I return.

Thanks
I love Priceline ....not always suitable but this trip won't change so it works for me this time
At $120 I can justify staying Mid Town-especially looking at "normal" rates for this time of year.

Early check in JFK update?

Any update on checking in luggage 12 hours ahead at JFK?.

I take number6's point re valuables , but would love to have the ability to leave my bags and then spend the day in Manhattan without having to go back to the airport hotel prior to check in.

Ok. Got varying anwers from both the EXP desk . eg 6 hours, day of departure, . Also got 6 hours from the main AA switch.
Decided to take a chance and go to the airport .

No problems. Checked in at 9am for a 8 pm flight,

Now here's hoping the bags arrive....
