Online Check-in for Domestic Leg of Intl Itinerary

Travelling LAX-PVG next month. I've requested a sticker upgrade on the ORD-LAX leg of the return. If I don't get it in advance, can I check in online to maximize my chances of getting the upgrade at the gate? I'm guessing the answer is no, but I thought I'd verify with the experts here. Is the answer the same if it were for the outbound LAX-ORD leg? Thanks.

Nope - Passport & stuff

Your travel docs must be entered @ c/i desk. Arrive at airport early if upg is your bet.

Sorry, no. I tried a few weeks ago and I got a message saying that one needs to check-in in person if there is an international segment within 24 hours of the domestic flight.

Wink In person.

Gotta check in at the counter. I went through this for a SNA to BZE trip via DFW. I asked the CSR and she said I had to check in person at SNA. I told her SNA isn't an international airport, but she said it didn't matter since that is the beginning of my routing.

I checked in at SNA and got my upgrades too!
