Arpey Is Ready For AMR's Close-Up; Are Unions?

He's the chief executive of AMR, and his firm had an unusual "close-up" this week: the company's American Airlines unit granted permission to CNBC to tape its employees at work in various capacities, across the U.S. The cable business channel will edit the footage into a behind-the-scenes documentary.

Without knowing specifically, most such CNBC specials air (ot at least re-air) on Wall Street holidays (when the network doesn't do much live). One such holiday coming up in only a week, but that might be too soon. Thanksgiving anyone?

I don't know exactly how this works, but Tivo doesn't have programming that far in advance yet. (My Tivo, for example, has programming only for part of the day on 10/18. Same with the Tivo website.)

I think if we wait another day or two, the Tivo programming will be updated to include 10/18 at which point we can schedule the recording. Or, maybe using a 'wishlist' would work.

My cable company DVR's interactive program guide shows:

Oct 18 at 8 pm and again at 11 pm central time.

Oct 22 at 8 pm and again at 11 pm central time.

So if you have a cable company DVR, you should be able to set any of these airings to record.

My TiVo updated this morning with schedules through 10/20...two showings of the AA program are now available for recording on 10/18. Looks to be two hours long.

AA on CNBC - Oct 18

Sorry if this has already been posted:

Two-hour Special Anchored and Reported by Peter Greenberg to Air on CNBC Wednesday, October 18th at 9 PM ET

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Sept. 29 -- With unprecedented behind-the-scenes
access, CNBC reveals the inner workings of the world's biggest airline
in an original two-hour documentary INSIDE AMERICAN AIRLINES: A WEEK IN
THE LIFE hosted and reported by Peter Greenberg, NBC "Today" travel
editor. The program will air on CNBC on Wednesday, October 18th
beginning at 9 PM ET with a rebroadcast at Midnight.

How 9/11 changed the way pilots and flight attendants train for their
jobs... why one passenger on a flight pays $50 for a ticket while
another passenger on the same flight pays a whopping $800... the reason
it is so hard for frequent flyers to cash in their miles... and how
airlines manage the volatile price of fuel. CNBC tackles these and
many other issues facing the nation's airlines -- and tens of millions
of air travelers -- in this unique documentary.

During one week in August, CNBC received extraordinary access to
virtually every department within American Airlines. With more than a
dozen camera crews and producers, CNBC documented the effort that is
required to safely carry nearly two million passengers each week, and
operate more than 2,000 flights each day.

"CNBC cameras had a chance to capture a view of American Airlines that
most travelers have never before seen," said Josh Howard, CNBC Vice
President of Long Form Programming. "We were allowed unfettered access
to all aspects of the airline's operations. The result is a first-ever
look at what goes into running an extraordinarily complicated business."

One segment of the broadcast focuses on the minute-by-minute drama that
unfolded one night inside the American Airlines operations center in
Dallas, as controllers coped with one problem after another: airplanes
with mechanical problems, a passenger who became ill during a flight,
and thunderstorms wreaking havoc on operations at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport.

"Travelers will get to see how many employees, with differing
responsibilities, are needed to work together to insure the safety of
travelers, while keeping the airline flying as close to 'on time' as
possible," Howard said.

CNBC chose to profile American Airlines because it is the only one of
the so-called old-line carriers that has avoided seeking bankruptcy
protection, despite the financial storms that have beset all airlines.
The documentary will examine all aspects of the American Airlines
operation to explain how they've managed to do it.

For instance, one segment focuses on the airline's near-obsessive
efforts to save fuel -- they've eliminated carrying some magazines on
board simply because the weight of each magazine has a direct impact on
fuel efficiency. The program will also explore the tense relationship
between management and labor, and provide an exclusive look at how
flight attendants now receive martial arts training to protect against
terrorists.

"Each segment of this program will have even the most experienced flyers
saying 'I didn't know that,'" says Greenberg, a nationally known
aviation expert and Emmy-Award winning investigative reporter.

American Airlines -- which agreed in advance that it would have no
editorial control over the production of the program -- opened its books
to CNBC to show exactly how it prices tickets, and how it determines
which of its flights are profitable, and which are not.

"We will show a seating chart of a particular flight that traveled from
Dallas to Hartford, and show that a guy sitting in one seat paid $800,
while the guy sitting next to him paid a fraction of that," Greenberg
said. "And we'll explain why it happens that way."

Viewers will see the intricate procedure of maintaining airliners, and
get a look at the varied kinds of cargo that goes into the belly of a
passenger jet -- cargo that is gold to the airline, but a potential
threat to its passengers.

To capture the action on the flight deck, and the communications between
the pilots and the control towers, CNBC was granted permission to mount
tiny cameras in the cockpits of some of American's jetliners. It is
believed to be the first time a news organization has had
takeoff-to-landing access to the flight deck of a commercial airliner
since the attacks of 9/11.

INSIDE AMERICAN AIRLINES: A WEEK IN THE LIFE also includes Greenberg's
interview with Gerard J. Arpey, Chairman and Chief Executive of American
Airlines. It is Arpey's first one-on-one television interview.

The Executive Producers of INSIDE AMERICAN AIRLINES: A WEEK IN THE LIFE
are Mitch Weitzner and Peter Greenberg. Josh Howard is the Executive in
Charge of Production and Vice President of Long Form Programming.
