Post American Airlines jet catches fire during servicing at LA airport

LOS ANGELES -- An engine on an American Airlines Boeing 767 caught fire Friday while being serviced by mechanics at Los Angeles International Airport, and leaking fuel forced a runway and two taxiways to shut down, authorities said. No one was hurt.

The fire broke out about 12:30 p.m. while the twin-engine jet was in the American Airlines maintenance area and the flames were put out within minutes, Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers said.

"The fire was limited to the engine area, but it did cause significant fuel leak," Myers said.

It was on the TV all day today. Apparently the fire was out in twenty minutes. I will watch www.ntsb.gov over the next few days to see what happened.

"The damage will be evaluated and the engine will be replaced, that's why we do maintenance work on our planes," said the spokesman.

They do maintenance work so they can have some damage to evaluate, and so they can replace engines?

This could only mean one thing....

we should expect many threads, asking about what the compensation should be for being downgraded to a 757 on a transcon....

Or threads about the GA asking for 40+ volunteers to be bumped...

Was this a 762 or a 763?

It was N330AA, a 762. Here's a photo of the aftermath:

There's more info on this airliners.net thread along with speculation that it may be written off:

Were any FTers on AA201 JFK-LAX yesterday? It operated that flight before the incident, arriving LAX at 9:47 a.m.

Great Photos!

I suspect this 762 is going to the scrap yards. It appears a late stage failure on the port engine sent schrapnel all over the plane including the starboard wing and engine. Good to hear there were no fatalities.

After looking at the images it is pretty clear that this aircraft is scrap metal. AA would have to replace the entire wing, and probably the rear fuselage section including tail to get it airworthy again.

Well, they could try just replacing the engine. It would remind me of some of the smaller carriers in China about 15 years ago!

The best option may be to start removing the mothballs from a dessert dweller. And then off this aircraft to the LAX fire department as a training ground. There's not much point spending money repairing an aold aircraft when you have more parked in mothballs.

Good and bad

= This loss wont affect intl ops.

= That's one less 762 for transcons. Unless AA has another in storage

I was at LAX yesterday...by the time my flight arrived from LHR (AA-136) at 2:15, there wasn't too much commotion.........I did however see a few more firetrucks later on in the afternoon.... don't know if it had anything to do with this incident...
