AAgent says its a weird glitch, placed me on hold and called technical support.
got back on the phone to say they expect the AC equipment to change again and we would be able to assign seats again. Also said with paid business, we are on the flight.. HUACA?

I would suggest phoning AA and just asking what the fare basis is
If concerned about the overbooking state, the safest bet might simply be to cancel and rebook on another carrier. Copa has business class availability showing via Panama City or Jetblue has a nonstop flight if prepared to go economy

Agree. Call and ask for the fare code. based on your post above, you know what to ask for. 99.9% of the time the agent will give you the one letter, politely say "Id like the full fare basis code, thx"

Unless things have changed, which given other website changes is certainly possible, one can go to the AA refunds site, enter the ticket number and run a receipt, see detailed fare rules, etc. separately / before one actually requests a refund.

So off the phone again….. another AAgent has looked into this flight, advised to sit tight for another AC change.
Honestly, after a few glasses of Malbec, I think Im gonna back off a week and check back in.
Keep you all posted. This is one twisted trip !

Keeping an eye out for that AC with an EF alert. Will say hi if it happens. Does anybody know how AA reassign seats when there is a downgauge?

Call back and talk to another agent and get seats assigned in J cabin.
Right now, EF shows available to sell of 5J 3D 7Y (the 7 is a minimal #). There is no reason you shouldn't make the flight.
And EF knows its a 757, so those should be real #s.

Two points:
1) I've never seen a Y-UP fare that books into D. AA does not consider D to be a discount business fare bucket, and I'd be extremely surprised to see it used this way.
2) If the J cabin is already over-committed by at least 3 and AA is willing to sell another 5 seats, it does seem like the AAgent's advice to wait for another aircraft change is reasonable, as I can't imagine any other reason why they'd do this. Then again, I don't understand as a general principle why there would be a disconnect between the revenue management expectations and the schedule/operational expectations in the first place.

EF is showing J0 D0 I0 for AA 1596 on 1/23/16, as a 757. It's an international 757, and there are still some MCE seats available. It boils down to how much you trust the AAgents. Right now, you can't book J on that flight.

Well, they could always change it to a domestic 757 and get enough seats.

I'm going keep on top of this and report accordingly.
Meanwhile, Ive emailed my hotel to see if I can extend a day and perhaps re-accomodate the next day.
