What does everyone prefer, I am being forced to make the decision due to a late booking.

MCE may have extra legroom, but the seat is still the same width and that makes all the difference to me.

An aisle seat with the middle seat open would be my preference. Does AA still block the middle seats on certain rows of the 737?

You are going to get varying answers to this. Personally I would take any MCE seat over any non-MCE seat. This is really personal preference.

Aisle - then setup a seat alert on EF for an aisle in MCE. I'm sure one will open up closer to departure date.
Cheers.

I would take the MCE seat since legroom is more important to me. Once took a red-eye LAX-IAD and sat in an aisle seat - my legs were very sore the next day.
