AA metal mileage upgrades with layover

Is there any maximum layover beyond which a single mileage upgrade is no longer valid?

I'm thinking of booking a two segment itinerary (international to domestic) with a slightly less than 24 hr layover (which therefore does not count as a stopover).

For international connections(I-D, D-I), its 24 hours. I believe it's 4 for domestic

If you are on an international routing...can you have a 24hr stop at a 'domestic connection'?? Anyone know?

ie I-D1-D2-D3... can a stop at D2 be 24?

Yes. And it is 24 hours, not 23:59, on international.

and mileage upgrades are valid across the layover? (I know for UA, SWUs are only valid if the layover is under 12 hours, not sure about miles).

For a revenue itinerary, even international ones, if one is connecting D-D(assuming non-alaska/Hawaii routes), 4 hour rule will apply. For award travel, 24 hours is allowed for all connections on an international itinerary

As long as your flights are on the same PNR and qualify for a single miles/co-pay or SWU upgrade, then you can have a layover longer than 24 hrs. and still use only one upgrade instrument.

For example, last year I flew MIA-RDU, 3 day stop, then RDU-DFW-FRA. All one PNR, upgraded all 3 segments with a single miles + co-pay upgrade.
