LAX-LHR Goes (returns to) Double Daily

AA keeps building up at LAX.

Effective March 28, 2015, double-daily, year-round 777-300ER service between LA and Heathrow.

Awesome this was last double daily in summer 2008, right?

linglingfool Oct 30, 2014 12:29 pm

Where did the LHR slot pair come from? CLT/PHL?

Yes, it was double daily at some point and LAX-JFK red-eyes were even thrice daily. This feels like a DL PR stunt announcing an old route they used to fly and are picking it back up.

New inbound?

Could come from anywhere. Keep in mind with the BA/IB/AA/US joint venture, they treat the whole pie as one, and then split the expenses and revenues. The slot could have come from anywhere inside the joint venture's portfolio.

This is why AA made such a big deal of the ATI/JV back 5 years ago.

Amazing news!

I wonder where the slot has come from? Also what does this mean for other 77W routes - is this being flown by new 77W arriving into the fleet, or will this result in shifts in 77W flights from other routes?

Certainly a huge amount of competition on LAX-LHR now. By next year I believe there will be up to 9 flights per day between LA and LHR. Certainly in Economy there are some very cheap fares on the route. Lower than JFK-LHR!

AA/BA 4x Daily
VS 2x daily
DL 1x daily
NZ 1x daily
Norwegian 3x weekly (LGW)

Ha, good question. The press release mysteriously only provides outbound times.

Where did the previous LHR slot pair go???

In other words, in case you missed it, AA has two daily LAX-LHR flights until sometime in 2008, so they obviously had that slot pair back then. Did they get the same slot pair back or a new slot pair?

Maybe they realized how many customers are upset wtih the UK departure tax and these planes will thus return from somewhere else? :D

United also does this route.

Ah, good point, did not think about it in the context of the JBV.

Presumably they didn't let a valuable asset like that sit around unused for 6 years ;)

MAH4546 Oct 30, 2014 3:26 pm

First flight lands day after British Airways terminates Heathrow-Rotterdam. That might be where the slot comes from.

VickiSoCal Oct 30, 2014 4:06 pm

I wish the LAX departures were BA, AA, BA, AA, rather than the two AA flights nested in the middle.

Exec_Plat Oct 30, 2014 5:17 pm

I'll make sure to book the early departure..that way when they go mechanical or someone names their SSID al queda, I wont get stuck overnight!
