November trip to SJD

I have a trip booked - miles one way, cash the other) 11/12 - 16 ORD - SJD

This is presently outside of the travel advisory https://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInform...avelAlerts.jsp - which only extends to 10/15.

I am skeptical Cabo will be in any real state to welcome guests based on reports coming from there. It is presently under martial law and all the stores have been looted and gutted. The hotels and airport are in severe disrepair.

I tried calling the AAdvantage Gold desk, but they held firm even when asking to rebook elsewhere. Any advice?

This is my 40th birthday vacation, we have been planning for a few years. I'm ok with it not being "perfect", but I don't think Cabo San Lucas is going to be ready for serious resort traffic in 7 weeks.

As American Airlines and US Airways continue to operate as separate carriers (though they are part of the same, merged parent company), this question has been moved to the pre-merger American Airlines forum as it relates to AA side of operations.

Have you looked into what it would cost you to cancel, redeposit miles, pay the change penalty and rebook elsewhere? Or maybe book at another time?

What is the status of the lodging you have booked?

I would expect that the travel advisories and waivers remain in a fluid (no pun intended) situation.

The AS advisory already covers your travel dates, so I'd expect others to follow.

It's a tough call. I also have a trip to Cabo around the same time on the books. I've been promised that everything should be running smoothly by the beginning of November, but YMMV. One thing to consider is that the local economy is utterly dependent on tourism...I would expect that getting the hotels put back together before the holiday rush is a top priority. I'll definitely have my eye on it, too.

There have been reports on Trip Advisor of AA waiving all change fees and keeping the ticket value for a year. Depends on who you talk to.

I have friends there now. It is a major disaster. Do not go there in 2014. If you want to help the locals send money to disaster relief organizations. Cabo is unique being very isolated and in a desert. This presents very unique rebuilding challenges.

Best wishes to all.
