Obtaining Seats Under Airport Control

I am trying to snag two seats which are blocked for release at the airport. As I understand it, flights go to airport control 4 hours prior to departure. At that time, do I need to talk to someone at the airport (gate agent, ticket agent, etc.) to get the seats, or will they be available online when the flight goes to airport control? If I do need to wait until I'm at the airport to get them assigned, can a skycap do that for me, or does it need to be an agent inside?

As much as I travel, I have never before been in the position of having a special need for particular seats that are saved for airport control... thanks for any help you can provide!

Any agent at the airport should be able to assign the seat for you. They're not normally available online via aa.com.

Neither aa.com nor phone agents can assign seats that are blocked for airport control. Only airport agents can assign them.

Probably the best example of such seats are those blocked for handicapped persons or those needing special assistance. These seats usually are at the bulkheads.

Of course, if you have no status, all elite-blocked seats such as exit rows and front Y rows are considered under airport control.
