Additional JFK-SFO frequency starting June 11 2014 (going to 5x daily)
Hi all,
I've been complaining about this to AA since they replaced the wide body aircraft with the 32B's. Up until now they haven't increased frequency like they did on the JFK-LAX route, thus resulting in significantly lower inventory and higher prices.
Just saw this on the timetables, AA will be introducing a 5th daily flight between JFK-SFO on the new birds.
AA 163 JFK to SFO 8:00pm Depart, 11:35pm Arrival (glad to see a later option now)
AA 164 SFO to JFK 8:40AM Depart, 5:45pm Arrival
Let's hope the added inventory brings down the prices!

The additional SFO flight was announced last September. Also, 85/24 switches from a 763 to 32B on June 11. Overall inventory for AA is down despite the additional frequency.

And this isn't really new. There were 5 or 6 daily flights (on 767s) a couple years ago. Still a massive capacity cut, as RxCapt points out.

I suspect the route might eventually move to 6-7x daily when all is said and done.

While I'd love that, I'm dubious. I assume they've ordered exactly enough A321T's to support the planned frequencies on JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO (plus maintenance spares). To add service, they'd either have to order more planes, reconfigure regular A321s as A321Ts, or run a split operation. None of those are simple.

I'd have to agree with MAH4546. If AA sees opportunity to take away even more business from UA (make no mistake, that's been happening systemwide for more than two years now), then it won't be a gigantic undertaking to configure a few more A321s to 32Bs.
I'm still surprised that the plans for LAX-JFK included just two redeyes eastbound, and not three. Something like 2130, 2230 and 2330 would be ideal for me. Seasonally, MIA gets three redeyes from LAX. If the 32Bs are successful, then there's room for a 14th and perhaps a 15th daily LAX-JFK flight.

But I could have sworn the original schedule had 3 redeyes, and looks like the 3rd redeye became a 4.30pm departure from LA. Or am I imagining things?

I understand the increased demand during the summer, but it still seems a little odd increasing service to/from SFO when the runways are under construction along with the associated delays.

When ATC slows arrivals/departures because of runway issues, the flights most frequently affected are the short hops (LAX mostly). Sure, congestion might delay some JFK departures, but I doubt arrivals will be impacted much.

Also, they just don't have a choice. Converting that last 763 means a huge drop in seats unless they swap them.
I really hope they consider a 6th, but let's first see if Doug Parker keeps the 32Bs as they are initially configured.
