Free Checked Bag / Baggage Changes as of 8 Apr 2014

It wasn't log before this happened, but the AA Gold benefits are starting to get watered down.

http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/el...fits-chart.jsp

Looks like folks using a now-more-expensive AAnytime award also lose checked bag benefits.

Guess Doug Parker thinks AA Golds are overentitled, too.

Yup. I don't mind it because I very rarely check a big, even if it is free. As long as I have a theoretical chance at an upgrade and an MCE seat, I'm happy.

I'd love to see them open up awards on upgrade seats, though. That would be a net positive for me, even in light of the AAnytime devaluation

US's credit card just picked up a free checked bag, effective April 30.

Just got the email this morning.

Coming Soon to an airport near you: First checked bag FREE!

Dear Superguy,

We're pleased to announce that as a US Airways Dividend Miles® MasterCard® cardmember, you and up to four companions will now enjoy your first eligible checked bag FREE. This benefit will be available on all domestic US Airways operated flights on April 30th.
Not that I need it, but it looks like this may be where the free bag went. Not sure if it'll stack with any FF elite benefits.

Would be nice if I did, but I don't think there's precedent for that with any other card on any other airline, is there? It's never an "extra" checked bag free... always just your "first" checked bag free.

This seems to align with current US policy. What a surprise!

This looks to be part of a larger set of changes to the AA baggage fees as of today:

http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInforma...eAllowance.jsp

I also noticed that AS non-Gold MVPs also lost the second bag per the AA exceptions page, but yet not per AS:

http://www.alaskaair.com/content/mil...-benefits.aspx

Let's see if AS reciprocates.

Have Golds just lost free checked bags?

For tickets purchased on/after today? If so, this would be somewhat unprecedented, as UA and DL give their lowest tier elites 1 checked bag.

Check out the new exceptions list from AA.com:
http://www.aa.com/i18n/utility/baggageExceptions.jsp

EDIT: I believe the information posted on AA.com's baggage page is incorrect. US is also tweaking their baggage allowances, effective April 23. I believe that going forward, AA Golds and US Silvers will get 1 checked bag for free.

Wow, really unprecedented. What's next, no free bag to Europe (Parker always wants to do that)? no free coke in economy class?

So the difference between being Gold and having a Citi AA Exec now is what... a 25% mileage bonus?

The elite benefits page shows one free bag for Golds effective for tickets purchased today and beyond.

†For tickets issued on or after April 8, 2014, for travel on or after that date, Gold members traveling on American Airlines operated flights are eligible for one free checked bag; for tickets issued prior to April 8, 2014, Gold members are eligible for two free checked bags.

Its just a 2 -> 1 devaluation.

One bag should be enough.
