AS in playing DL against AA.

That's not my interpretation. Talking to AA about increased cooperation does not imply that AS is "playing" any airline against AA. Sounds like AS needs and wants AA's help.

Given DL's recent (and ongoing) service expansion from SEA, I'd say AS is viewing them much more as a competitor than a partner. Just this week, DL removed codeshares from their schedule for 9 routes out of SEA.

This is quite good, seeing the enormous hole AAUS has in the northwestern portion of the country.

Something similar to this was posted at least a month ago in the AS forum.

I also don't see it as AS playing DL against AA.

DL is making a hard push for SEA-based flyers now.

AS will do anything that benefits AS without regard to loyalty. This includes alliances, passengers, and employees.

Yep, apologies. It was linked from something posted today but failed to notice that the original article was from June.

In any case, I just saw that DL yesterday cancelled DL*/AS codeshares in 9 markets so as Austinrunner suggests they don't have the power to play one airline against the other as I initially thought, but are probably scrambling to fill a revenue hole.

AS is big on the west coast and Mexico, as well as Alaska. I don't know if this talk is about AS joing OW, or just strengthening their relationship with AA. Whatever that may mean since they are already pretty close, except for the lack of recipricol upgrades.
