Best route for LAX-HKG
I may be flying LAX-HKG soon. I am AAdvantage Gold and will be flying discount coach. American does not seem to fly this direct. Who should I fly with? Will I earn base American miles? Will I be able to use my miles to get an upgrade?

We just did this a few weeks ago. If you use AA from LA to San Jose to Narita, you can upgrade with AA miles as you fly AA metal. We changed to Cathay Pacific from Narita to Hong Kong. With the right class of ticket, you can upgrade all the way through (atleast with a VIPOW you can). Unfortunately, that ticket was much more expensive. You can earn miles on Cathay, but again you need the right class of ticket.
