This question gets asked every so often this time of year, specially more when you are in need of miles for qualification purpose. All flights are reported to FAA, local transportation authorities by the following criteria:
Airline code, AA, UA, US, DL, etc
Flight number,
Date, this is the scheduled date of operation, regardless of when it actually departs
City that it operates, and flight time.

It doesn't matter that the flight is delayed for 24hrs, and ends up arriving 48hrs latter, it is still known by its scheduled operating date.

This also assist in recordkeeping for on-time departure/arrival and maintenance record.

I might be wrong on this part, but you will never have a situation where there two identical flight #, operating on the same date, within the same city pair, at different times.

No. I've flown in Y. That's real pain...no sham involved.

Cheers.

Looks like I will be trying to do the same thing. My alma mater is headed to the Liberty bowl in memphis on Dec 31 after winning conference. Looks like that might be my 100th segment.

While I might be unhappy with a 24 hour departure delayed, I would still be amazed if that same flight arrived 48 hours later
