Anyone have the scoop on what percentage of MD-80s have WiFi nowadays?

I think it's pretty close to all... I haven't met a Mad Dog in the last 3 years that wasn't wifi equipped.

Pretty close, but not all.

I've been 1 on MD-80 in 2013 without wifi, and flew 3 MD-80's in Q4 2012 that didn't have wifi.

Per GoGo Wifi's website, not all MD80's on AA are still configured with Wifi:

Ex-SMF, most if not all ex-TWA MD-83s seem to offer GoGo.

Perhaps play the lotto more often?

It wasn't an issue having to go 40 min in 2012 for 2 of the 3 flights without wifi.

The other 2 MD-80 flights being over 2 hrs 50 minutes in air, were not exacly fun without Wifi.

99% of the 772 flights are long haul international flights and the Gogo system uses ground based cell towers. Gogo only works in the lower 48 and in Mexico and Canada close to the US border.

In time the 772s are supposed to get the satellite based system found on the 773s.

It's worth noting:

  • Gogo is adding a satellite-based option to its own porfolio, though real work on this front is really just getting started this year and will require new airframe hardware to function
  • AA announced that they will be adding overwater (read: satellite) in flight Internet to their 777-200ER aircraft, but did not announce a timeline and also did not announce a vendor, so this could be a ways off. Since a vendor has not been announced, it may be different than the system used on the 777-300ER.
