If someone had the free time to go through the FlyerGuide wiki page on the topic I bet the history would indicate what the rules were back then.
The challenge has gone through different rules

back before 2007 it used to be that all EQPs earned qualified for the challenge
Then it became restricted such that only AA marketed flights were eligable
Now it has its selection of carriers

Of course it also used to be free to sign up

JDiver's comment made me think about something. The JBA with BA/IB/JL/QF is strictly for flights to/from the US, if I am not mistaken. If so, will the OP get challenge credit on JBA partner flights that do not involve a US leg? This is more curiosity than anything at this point.

For instance,
- OP buys JFK<>LHR round trip on BA.
- OP then buys a side ticket LHR<>VIE

If still yes, strange how they extend the JBA benefit beyond the JBA.

Geez... Yes

It may be due to close relationship between airlines that they are included as eligable carriers, but there are no restrictions regarding earning points towards challenges on the eligable carriers

Or
OP flies MAD-SIN 5x via LHR And completes the challenge that way.
No revenue for AA n that case, but it would still fulfill the challenge.

Thanks to all. I read the fine print carefully, and there is no requirement for a U.S. leg (which I couldn't do anyway since I don't live in the U.S.). I already have 16,000+ miles on AA metal, so only need a few more for the challenge (my upcoming trip will give me some 10k more than I need). Sorry about posting to CX, but I (mistakenly) thought a CX expert might know.
