I'm amazed at the tales of what would be otherwise described as "insane buying" on this board.
It would be interesting if some budding MBA-type did a study/paper on the impact this promotion has had on the sales of Nutrigrain bars & other obscure Kelloggs branded items. If such a study was done, it would surely be a beacon to other companies to affiliate with Aadvantage, although if there's a major glut of miles out there, wouldn't American be tempted to "devalue" the miles (by raising award levels) at some point? |

Just checking on FlyingHammy's progress with miles from Costco. (chuckle) Did you know Costco divides up California into separate regions? I know this because the members mag that I get (which I get in the MIDDLE OF THE MONTH so I always miss out on "sale events") lists only the Costcos from Oxnard to San Diego and east to El Centro (where I think you nearly melted).
How about plundering the Costcos in the Central Valley? (You can sell the cereal bars to the press hanging around Modesto. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ) Or in the Reno area where I don't believe there's a sales tax on food? Then there's Oregon, and of course Montana has no sales tax on food... |

The food bank I contacted was suspecious on why I wanted the boxes, and commented that "the value [I get] would be more than the value donated" and declined the donation in the end. This is odd...I thought they should just be interested in getting the food. But oh well, their loss. I've infornmed another food bank who's more than happy to help me with the boxes. Okay, I promise this would be my last run!
Actually took the same flight to San Diego as I did last Friday, and changed plane to ABQ, New Mexico. Got there at noon, picked up 300 cases, and the food project had 7 volunteers to help emptying the cereal bars. Left with three boxes of boxes, left ABQ before 6pm, changed plane in Phoenix, and back home at 10pm. Never thought I'd say this, but I think this time I finally had enough Twists! ------------------ WooHoo! |
Bought six palettes (231 X 300 per palette if memory serves) of the twists when they were selling them at Sam's (no bulk discount from Sam's no matter who I talked to or how much I tried, even the manager doesn't get a discount of purchases at Sam's club). Food bank truck picked them up for me, food bank volunteers helped me empty and stack the opened flattened boxes (they sell by the pound so don't need packaging just repacked 3 in one box with 20 individual swirls).
In one horrible weekend (were up against the deadline for the doubling certs)my wife and I sat down and cut (2-3 at a time) the certs out with scissors. Used proventure software and laser printer to make the labels, very easy. Bound 5 certs and one double cert(promo no longer available) with small elastic band(size 16 2 1/2"X1/16" 2500 per pack). Once I had ten small bundles I would bundle again. Made the final count easier and I suspect the count easier the other end. Enclosed printed listing with number of individual bundles of 500 miles + double cert, number of bundles of ten and total miles to be credited and AA number and address and telephone number. Sent it all off by USPS priority mail (stupid in retrospect not to register it but did it Monday morning after the hellish weekend and probably wasn't thinking to clearly). All miles were posted to our account surprisingly in 500 mile increments within 2 weeks. Have already given away about a third of the miles and have not yet used 1 mile for travel for myself, just can't get out of mileage accumulation mode when it comes to travel. Seemed like a good idea, realized that it was completely nuts while actually doing it, now pleased that I did it and if they ever come out with the doubling promo again will do $20K worth (but will hire some kids to do the cutting and assembling of the certs this time). Best deal out there for cheap travel and beats just about any mileage run, infact even buying the nutrigrains at $6+ for 300 miles beats most mileage runs http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif Too bad as I used to really enjoy looking for and doing mileage runs. |

Did you have the cases already set aside for you in ABQ? Did you have the food bank on "alert" with standby personnel? Did you get the same "deal" on the twists that you got in CA? ------------------ 4miles "will take all kinds of crap for miles |

FH, good going. One thing that may help. Have them load a full wrapped palette at costco with the forklift. It should fit in the back of a flat bed truck. Most larger food banks also have the forklifts so unloading will be easy too. Then use the palette as a table upon which to break down the boxes and just work your way down to the bottom. Loading and unloading individual cases takes too long and is too much like hard work, there is enough of that dealing with the certs.
